Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, has donated $1 million to an inauguration fund for President-elect Donald Trump — a perhaps surprising move given the pair’s rocky past. The tech giant’s billionaire CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, dined with the president-elect at his Mar-a-Lago resort in November, as he tried to patch up relationship with the 78-year-old following the election. The Republican previously was highly critical of Mr Zuckerberg and Facebook – calling the platform “anti-Trump” in 2017. It is understood Meta didn’t make similar donations to President Joe Biden’s inaugural fund in 2020 or to Trump’s previous inaugural fund in 2016. The company confirmed its million-dollar donation to the inaugural fund to US media on Wednesday. While it sounds like a lot of money to the everyman, $1 million is pocket change for Mr Zuckerberg who is worth $214 billion personally and whose company Meta is worth $1.59 trillion. Picture: AFP MORE: Ivanka reveals ‘hurtful toll’ behind Trump snub Inauguration funds are used to pay for events and activities when a new president takes office — although many see them as attempts to win influence with the new administration. Mr Trump will be sworn in as the 47th US president on 20 January. A rocky past It has been far from smooth sailing between Mr Trump and Mr Zuckerberg in recent years. Things went even further south when Facebook and Instagram suspended the former president’s accounts in 2021, after they said he praised those engaged in violence at the Capitol riot on 6 January. Since then, Mr Trump has slammed Meta – calling Facebook an “enemy of the people” in March. He also said this year that a law banning TikTok in the US would unfairly benefit Facebook. In August, Mr Zuckerberg told Republican politicians in a letter that he regretted bowing to pressure from the Biden administration to “censor” some Facebook and Instagram content during the coronavirus pandemic. Mr Trump will be sworn in next month. Mr Trump wrote in a book published in September that Mr Zuckerberg would “spend the rest of his life in prison” if he tried to intervene in the 2024 election. But the president-elect appears to have changed his tune in recent months. He told a podcast in October it was “nice” Mr Zuckerberg was “staying out of the election”, and thanked him for a personal phone call after he faced an assassination attempt. However, there’s a clear favourite for Mr Trump when it comes to tech billionaires — with Elon Musk positioning himself as the president-elect’s ‘first buddy’ because of his extensive donations to his election campaign. The bromance was so strong, it led to Mr Musk being placed in charge of a new Department of Government Efficiency (Doge). So if Mr Zuckerberg is trying to impress he might have to dig a little deeper into those pockets. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose to records Tuesday after Donald Trump’s created only some ripples on Wall Street, even if they could were they to take effect. The S&P 500 climbed 0.6% to top the it set a couple weeks ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 123 points, or 0.3%, to set the day before, while the Nasdaq composite gained 0.6% as Microsoft and Big Tech led the way. Stock markets abroad mostly fell after said he on Mexico, Canada and once he takes office. But the movements were mostly modest. Stock indexes were down 0.1% in Shanghai and nearly flat in Hong Kong, while Canada’s main index edged down by less than 0.1%. Trump has often praised the , but investors are weighing whether his latest threat will actually become policy or is just an opening point for negotiations. For now, the market seems to be taking it more as the latter. The consequences otherwise for markets and the global economy could be painful. Unless the United States can prepare alternatives for the autos, energy products and other goods that come from Mexico, Canada and China, such tariffs would raise the price of imported items all at once and make households poorer, according to Carl Weinberg and Rubeela Farooqi, economists at High Frequency Economics. They would also hurt profit margins for U.S. companies, while raising the threat of retaliatory tariffs by other countries. And unlike tariffs in Trump’s first term, his latest proposal would affect products across the board. General Motors sank 9%, and Ford Motor fell 2.6% because both import automobiles from Mexico. Constellation Brands, which sells Modelo and other Mexican beer brands in the United States, dropped 3.3%. The value of the Mexican peso fell 1.8% against the U.S. dollar. Beyond the pain such tariffs would cause U.S. households and businesses, they could also push the Federal Reserve to slow or even halt its cuts to interest rates. The Fed had just begun from a two-decade high a couple months ago to offer support for the . While lower interest rates can boost the economy, they can also offer more fuel for inflation. “Many” officials at the Fed’s earlier this month said they should lower rates gradually, according to released Tuesday afternoon. The talk about tariffs overshadowed another mixed set of profit reports from U.S. retailers that answered few questions about how much more shoppers can keep spending. They’ll need to stay resilient after helping the economy avoid a recession, despite the high interest rates imposed by the Fed to get inflation under control. CEO Mark Smucker credited strength for its Uncrustables, Meow Mix, Café Bustelo and Jif brands. also helped prop up U.S. indexes. Gains of 3.2% for Amazon and 2.2% for Microsoft were the two strongest forces lifting the S&P 500. All told, the S&P 500 rose 34.26 points to 6,021.63. The Dow gained 123.74 to 44,860.31, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 119.46 to 19,174.30. In the bond market, Treasury yields held relatively steady following their big drop from a day before driven by relief following Trump’s pick for Treasury secretary. The yield on the 10-year Treasury inched up to 4.29% from 4.28% late Monday, but it’s still well below the 4.41% level where it ended last week. In the crypto market, bitcoin continued to pull back after late last week. It’s since dipped back toward $91,000, according to CoinDesk. It’s a sharp turnaround from the following Trump’s election. That boom had also appeared to have spilled into some corners of the stock market. The events of the Nov. 5 presidential election divided states, demographics and, in many cases, families. President-elect Donald Trump’s supporters celebrated the Republican candidate’s victory, while many who championed Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris fell into despair. With Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and other holidays following so closely on the heels of Election Day, the emotional wounds that opened between family members on different sides of the political divide are still fresh — and could affect how families celebrate the holidays. Local mental health professionals are reporting an uptick in anxiety, anger, confusion and depression among their patients. Some of those negative emotions are caused by family conflicts. “Something like politics, culture, these are issues that we as humans don’t really have as much control over, so there’s that helplessness that my clients feel regarding the election,” said licensed social worker Amber Kanoza of Pittsburgh’s Carrick neighborhood. “It’s been quite a turbulent past couple of weeks, being able to navigate what it all means,” said music therapist Elizabeth Ambrose of Pittsburgh’s East Liberty. Several local residents declined to talk on the record to TribLive about their holiday plans, citing concerns that doing so would inflame already tense relationships. Even under normal circumstances, the holidays can be stressful. But with these heightened conditions, local professionals offered strategies that they’re giving their patients to survive any verbal missiles lobbed over turkey and mashed potatoes. Should I stay or should I go? For those weighing the decision of whether to opt out of a family gathering, licensed social worker Jess Schiermeister — who sees clients at a private practice in Hampton — said people should look at the pros and cons. “I always encourage folks to do a cost-benefit analysis,” she said. “Which option would have a more harmful impact to them?” Many therapists stressed the importance of setting boundaries. Ambrose has put that into practice in her personal life as well. “Even now, with politics being so polarized, a lot of those discussions can go awry very quickly, and being in certain settings, feelings can become elevated,” she said. “I’ve found success in trying to avoid and protect my peace as much as I can.” Setting boundaries includes warning family members ahead of time about topics you won’t discuss and removing yourself from the situation if those wishes are repeatedly ignored. “I recognize that’s really hard,” Ambrose said. “Try to have those firm boundaries and be very upfront.” Keep your feet on the ground Two pieces of advice consistently arose among the pros for those keeping their regular holiday traditions: Have a plan and keep your emotions under control. Kanoza suggested grounding and mindfulness exercises. “The purpose of doing that is having a sense of awareness for yourself: What do I need? How am I feeling? Where am I feeling this stress?” she said. Taking five minutes to breathe, meditate and take stock of your body and mind beforehand can be a big help. Schiermeister suggested going so far as writing a script in your phone’s notes app for how you will respond to unwanted political talk. Aaron Beckley, a licensed clinical social worker in private practice in Hampton, recommended a technique called “gray rocking.” “Imagine yourself as a rock,” Beckley said. “If it rains, you’re a rock; it doesn’t matter. If the sun beats down, you’re a rock. Imagine yourself that way, no matter what they say. Your emotions are yours. How you express them is under your control.” Self-care matters If things get heated, there are strategies to employ during — and after — to lower your stress levels. Being a music therapist, Ambrose often directs clients to make carefully curated playlists to help with emotional regulation. Start with music that matches your anger or anxiety, then taper off. “Slowly decrease it or move it to a place where maybe there’s some calmer music at the tail end of the playlist, moving ... from a ragey state to a more relaxed place,” she said. Feel free to take a break. If a conversation is escalating, “Go hang out with the dog for a while, go outside, take a walk, go to the bathroom, call a friend, say a prayer, do whatever works,” said Mike Elliot, licensed professional counselor and clinical director of Elliot Counseling in East Liberty. Creating a “self-soothe kit” is a way to relax all five senses, Schiermeister said. Bundle items you find comforting using the guide of smell, taste, touch, sight and sound. “Is there a particular soft blanket they like? Is there a particular candle that they really enjoy? Is there a TV show that always brings them comfort?” Elliot said. These collections can be made portable in the midst of heightened situations. Take a square of your favorite chocolate, some great-smelling lotion and other objects in a purse, or leave them in your car for easy access. Building a found family For the 23% who are avoiding their relatives this year, finding a community of their own will be an important step. “Really lean on the people who are going through similar issues as you. What we can do is help comfort each other,” Kanoza said. No matter the politics, people may feel walled off from their typical support system for any number of reasons. Schiermeister said they shouldn’t feel lonely. “The week of the election, every single one of my clients said that they felt alone — all of them. And obviously they’re not, because each and every one of them said that to me,” she said. Hosting a “Friendsgiving” event and finding new ways to celebrate traditions will help keep the holidays bright. “I’d recommend looking at it the same way that someone would feel with grief, like if a loved one died and this was the first holiday without them,” Beckley said. “Remember those positive times. What were the traditions that were meaningful? How do I take that and do it for myself to hold the meaning that I want?” Bridging the divide Eventually working to heal the divide will require patience, self-reflection and acknowledgment of others’ feelings. With just a little more than three weeks between the presidential contest and the start of the holiday season, some will have to understand that there just hasn’t been time to process yet. Compassion for everyone will be required. “Try to be more mindful and try to be more empathetic as to why those individuals are reacting the way that they are. There’s space to grow and investigate,” Kanoza said. Schiermeister hopes there could be more space for listening, not just reacting. “And when I say listening, I don’t mean immediately becoming defensive or turning it into an argument,” she said. “Pointing fingers at each other isn’t getting us anywhere,” Elliot said. “So I think, where I can come in and have a positive conversation? I’m going to try to do that. And where I don’t feel that’s possible, I’m going to keep walking.”

Ricciardo has been particularly synonymous with the brand after taking up a marketing position as Optus’ Chief of Optimism . The role included fronting several campaigns for the brand and featuring in viral stunts, including last year’s gimmick of the Formula 1 star going undercover as a storefront Optus employee. Ricciardo and Optus have worked together for four years, but the partnership will not be progressing, as exposed in changes to the former Red Bull driver’s LinkedIn profile which no longer mentions his ties with the company. Optus confirmed the parting of ways with a brief message first issued to The Australian Financial Review . “The decision was taken as we looked to rebuild customer trust and focus on the fundamentals that we know are important to them – a resilient network, great value products and services, and simple, efficient customer service,” an Optus spokesperson said. Ricciardo is heading into the unknown in 2025. Having been cut by Red Bull’s junior team VCARB earlier this year, the 35-year-old has been linked with many new jobs that will keep him on the track. Right now he is without a seat for next year and is coming off one of the hardest years of his career where he was out-performed by his former teammate Yuki Tsunoda and replaced by Kiwi Liam Lawson. It’s why The Australian Financial Review’s Myriam Robin described Optus’ move as a “one-two kick in the guts for Daniel”. It emerged this week the axed F1 driver has been enjoying the unemployed life but still has plenty of options on the table. F1’s loss could be another category’s gain with the Aussie’s marketability and global recognition making him a prime target for the right team. While some have suggested the veteran could be a target for the new Cadillac team set to join the F1 grid in 2026 due to Ricciardo’s popularity in the US, his future has still not been publicly decided. Which makes the latest rumblings out of Toyota all the more intriguing. Toyota are not on the F1 grid as a stand-alone team but have been in the past. However, Toyota has strong motorsport roots around the world, featuring in NASCAR and, as of 2026, will join Australia’s Supercars Championship with its GR Supra. Race.news reported last week that the company was prepared to make a “whatever it takes” bid to lure Ricciardo out of retirement. Believed to potentially be a $10m offer, similar to what he was reportedly earning at VCARB this season, it’s been described as a “blank cheque operation”. Barty, meanwhile, is sadly loving her life in retirement. The three-time grand slam champion retired in the prime of her career aged 25 and is loving life as a mum. had another great day on Wednesday, and the biggest tokens led the market. is once again trading above $100,000, which is a critical psychological level for traders. As of 3 p.m. ET, in the past 24 hours alone, Bitcoin is up 5.3%, has jumped 5.2%, and is up 7.9%. The Fed and how it affects cryptocurrencies The Bureau of Labor Statistics announced this morning the closely watched Consumer Price Index (CPI) was up 2.7% from a year ago, 0.1% higher than in October, but in line with estimates. Traders are now convinced this will be the final data point needed to cut the federal funds rate to between 4.25% and 4.5% later this month. According to the CME, the odds of a cut are now at 94.9%. As much as crypto bulls want to say cryptocurrencies are about upending the current financial system, the biggest driver of higher values in crypto is and the actions of the Federal Reserve. When rates were going up, crypto fell, and now that rates are coming down, crypto is rising again. That shows crypto is trading more like a speculative asset than based on any fundamentals. Back to the old narratives The moves higher in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies since early November were all about the election. But that trade seems to be slowing as it gets priced into the market and traders look for the next catalyst. They found it today with lower rates, which could make borrowing less expensive and theoretically drive more economic activity. That's the same narrative that drove crypto in 2020 and 2021, but reversed when interest rates started rising. We are now back to the old themes, with trading dependent on rates for tailwinds or headwinds. I will note that while the federal funds rate gets the most attention, the 10-year rate is more important to businesses borrowing money to grow. And that rate is still up sharply in the last three months and flat for 2024. data by Where does crypto go from here? The changes in interest rates and potential regulation of crypto will be good for the industry, but not in the ways a lot of tokens are moving. I think it's real utility, like lower-cost financial transactions, stock trades on the blockchain, and subscriptions or loyalty programs on the blockchain, that will be unlocked from a changing administration. Some of that value may flow to tokens themselves, but Bitcoin and Ethereum are notoriously slow and costly blockchains, and Dogecoin is a meme coin. It's unlikely these are the places entrepreneurs build real businesses in 2025 and beyond. Those businesses will likely be built on other blockchains. Buyer beware of the pop Momentum is strong in crypto today, and that may last for some time. But the value of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Dogecoin will only go higher as long as more money is flowing into the ecosystem. And that momentum may stop as signs of a worsening economy continue to percolate through the economy.

Armed Arizona man 'threatened to kill Donald Trump and his family' in series of unhinged videos Manuel Tamayo-Torres posted videos brandishing high-powered weapons CLICK HERE: Sign up for DailyMail.com's daily U.S. politics newsletter Follow DailyMail.com's politics live blog for all the latest news and updates By JON MICHAEL RAASCH, U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 19:32 GMT, 27 November 2024 | Updated: 19:36 GMT, 27 November 2024 e-mail 1 View comments An Arizona man has been arrested after posting numerous videos online brandishing rifles, shotguns and a high-capacity AR-15 while threatening to kill Donald Trump and his children. Manuel Tamayo-Torres posted 'numerous lengthy videos' on Facebook threatening Trump and his family and even attended one of the president-elect's rallies in Arizona, court documents show. 'You're gonna die, your son's gonna die,' Tamayo-Torres said in a scary video posted Thursday. 'Your whole family is going to die.' 'This is reality for you now. This is the only reality you have in your future, dying,' the clip continued. 'Secret Service, FBI , CIA and the military are all defenseless.' Tamayo-Torres was charged with making threats against the president-elect, who is referred to as 'Individual 1' in the court filings. In another video Tamayo-Torres threatens to shoot Trump before holding up 'what appears to be a white AR-15 style rifle with a 30-round magazine inserted into it,' according to officials. The officials also describe in the court filings how the Arizona man made threats 'on a near-daily basis.' Almost everyday Tamayo-Torres posted videos 'where he talks about [Individual 1] and his family kidnapping and sex-trafficking his children.' An Arizona man was arrested for making threats to kill Donald Trump and his family Manuel Tamayo-Torres, who made repeated threats on Trump and his family, was at Trump's August 23 rally in Glendale Arizona, court documents reveal Tamayo-Torres said he witnessed the president-elect and the Secret Service 'kidnap his daughter' at the Glendale rally Even more shockingly, Tamayo-Torres even appeared at a Trump campaign rally in August. A video from August 23 shows Tamayo-Torres at a Trump campaign rally at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. In the video the man claims he 'observed [Individual 1] and Secret Service kidnap his daughter there.' Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) officials claim they discovered images on Facebook showing Tamayo-Torres holding a verified arsenal of weaponry. He brandished an AR-15, a rifle and a shotgun in one video, ATF officials claim in the court documents. Tamayo-Torres was arrested in California after videos showed him around the San Diego area, though the charges were filed in Arizona. This is just one of the latest threats made against the president-elect in what has been a tumultuous year for his personal safety. While visiting a section of the U.S.-Mexico border wall in Arizona in August, DailyMail.com tipped off Trump that another Arizona man who had made death threats against the Republican was on the loose. Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump tours the southern border with Mexico, Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024, in Sierra Vista, Arizona Ronald Lee Syvrud, 66, is being sought by Arizona authorities in connection with an alleged assassination plot on Donald Trump Trump thanked DailyMail.com for letting him know, saying 'Thank you for telling me.' Then with a chuckle he said: ' Let's get out of here right now!' It was a surprisingly chipper response just over a month after the first attempt on his life. Notoriously Trump was shot in the ear during a July 13 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks struck the president and several others, killing father Corey Comperatore as he shielded his family from incoming fire. Crooks was killed by Secret Service shortly after opening fire with an AR-15. The horrific rally prompted a review of the Secret Service, and soon thereafter its ex-director, Kimberly Chealte, resigned after getting ridiculed by Democrats and Republicans in Congress for the innumerable security failures that day. Again on September 15 Trump was targeted by another would-be assassin. Secret Service counter snipers keep watch during a campaign rally with Donald Trump Ryan Wesley Routh following his arrest in Martin County, Florida, on September 15. The gunman accused of planning to kill Donald Trump at his Florida golf course was indicted September 24, 2024 on three additional counts, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate Ryan Routh, 58, hid in the hedges near Trump's West Palm Beach golf course Trump International with an AK-47 and cameras before fleeing after being fired upon by Secret Service. Routh is currently being held in a federal detention center in Miami. Earlier this month, the Justice Department announced charges in an alleged Iranian plot to try to kill Trump. Defense sparks Truman past Van Horn in boys basketball opener'Unbelievable' Odegaard transforms Arsenal and gets Saka smiling againLiverpool leads as the class of the Champions League this season, dumping title holder Real Madrid into an almost unbelievable 24th place in the 36-team standings. No one felt the embarrassment of Madrid’s 2-0 loss at Anfield more than Kylian Mbappé, the superstar added in the offseason by the storied club that also was European champion against Liverpool in the finals of 2022 and 2018. Mbappé had a penalty saved in the second half and was earlier dumped on his behind by Conor Bradley’s perfect tackle in an instant viral moment. Monaco missed a chance to go second in the table, giving up a lead playing with 10 men from the 58th minute in a 3-2 loss at home to Benfica. Swiss forward Zeki Amdouni scored the winning goal in the 88th. Borussia Dortmund, the beaten finalist against Madrid in May, is up to fourth place after beating Dinamo Zagreb 3-0. Champions League standout Jamie Gittens now has four goals in five games, curling a rising shot in the 41st to open the scoring. The best comeback was at PSV Eindhoven, where the home team trailed Shakhtar Donetsk by two goals in the 87th minute before a 3-2 win was sealed by United States forward Ricardo Pepi’s goal deep in stoppage time. US defender Cameron Carter-Vickers scored an embarrassing own goal for Celtic — playing a no-look pass far beyond goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel — in a 1-1 draw with Club Brugge. Liverpool’s stand-in right back Bradley was a standout Wednesday, playing a key pass that set up Alexis Mac Allister to score the opening goal in the 52nd. After Mbappé’s penalty was pushed away by goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher in the 61st, Liverpool star Mo Salah missed with his spot-kick in the 70th, before substitute Cody Gakpo sealed the win with a header in the 77th. Madrid now has lost three of five games after defeats at Lille and at home to AC Milan. The record 15-time European champion has another tough trip next, at fifth-place Atalanta on Dec. 10. Congo teammates Ngal’Ayel Mukau and Silas impressed in wins for Lille and Red Star Belgrade. Mukau scored twice in 12th-place Lille’s 2-1 win at Bologna and Silas leveled for Red Star in a 5-1 rout of Stuttgart, though he barely celebrated his goal. Silas is on loan with the Serbian champion from Stuttgart. Aston Villa drew 0-0 with Juventus. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

[Editorial] Tariff alarm goes off

ENID, Okla. — Gov. Kevin Stitt says Oklahoma will be prepared to start deporting undocumented housed in state prisons as soon as Donald Trump is sworn in as president. As part of his announcement in a news release issued Nov. 15, 2024, Stitt named Public Safety Commissioner Tim Tipton to lead the planning efforts of Operation Guardian. What affect Stitt’s plan has on Northwest Oklahoma law enforcement remains unknown. Daylen Rivers, Garfield County Detention Facility administrator, said the jail usually has few undocumented people in custody. “I’d say we have only about one or two illegal immigrants a month or less,” Rivers said. Rivers said the way the process works for his facility is that the jail processes inmates who did not have legal identification, then calls Immigration and Custom Enforcement. “They would go to court to face their charges, then ICE would pick them up pretty quickly,” Rivers said. “Then they would usually take them to Tulsa.” Garfield County Sheriff Corey Rink said his office picks up people who committed a crime and their race really didn’t factor into the situation. “If they were illegal, most of the time they were getting caught on driving violations,” Rink said. “It would be things like not having a license or it not being their car.” Cass Rains, a spokesman for Enid Police Department, had the same answer. “It would take some time to do research on the numbers,” he said. Stitt said in his news release that he didn’t want the state to pay for what he described as the costs of the Biden administration’s “open border policies.” “As law and order returns to the White House, Oklahoma will lead the charge with a comprehensive plan to deport those who have committed crimes in Oklahoma while in the country illegally,” Stitt said in the announcement. “I am still committed to finding ways to pursue state-based workforce visas for those who want to pursue the American dream, but we will not tolerate criminal activity in our state.” Stitt said he believes Oklahoma’s efforts could serve as a model for other states. According to the governor, Oklahoma Department of Corrections houses 526 undocumented people. Locally, though, few remain in jail for long. “We move them on pretty quickly after they have faced their charges,” Rivers said. The financial year ended September 30, 2024 was a positive one for the Barbados dollar funds managed by Fortress Fund Managers (FFM), with returns of up to 12.4 per cent. This news was shared by Roger Cave, chairman and Peter Arender, CEO & chief investment officer in the leading fund manager’s 2024 Annual Reports for its three Barbados dollar funds – the Fortress Caribbean Growth Fund, the Fortress Caribbean High Interest Fund and the Fortress Caribbean Pension Fund. The reports, for the financial year ended September 30, 2024 highlighted funds’ performance and outlook. Caribbean Growth Fund gains 12.4 per cent for financial year In what was described as a “strong year”, the Fortress Caribbean Growth Fund gained 12.4 per cent and ended the period with an annual compound rate of return of 7.7 per cen since inception in 1996. The net asset value (NAV) or price per share of the Fund increased to $7.8973 from $7.0238 with net assets of $689 million compared to $605 million a year ago. “Throughout the year, global stocks posted steady, modest gains, and a rally in September added meaningfully to the year’s performance,” Cave and Arender said. They also noted that “the fund’s core allocations to the Fortress US Equity, Fortress International Equity and Fortress You Might Be Interested In Crystal Beckles-Holder, 2nd runner up in regional competition GUYANA: Body of child found after gold mine collapses Barbadians asked to help with return tickets for Haitians Emerging Market funds performed well, returning 27 per cent, 23 per cent and 21 per cent respectively over the year.” This contrasted with performance in the Caribbean. “The global index, tracking securities all over the world, was up 33 per cent while in the Caribbean, the Trinidad and Jamaica indices fell 13 per cent and five per cent respectively. The Barbados index posted a nine per cent gain, largely due to movement in shares of CIBC Caribbean on thin trading volumes.” Highlighting the fund’s positioning, the annual report noted that a third of its portfolio was invested in the Caribbean and two-thirds in the US, international and emerging markets, offering Barbados-based investors access to exceptional global diversification. “It is worth noting, however, that our ability to invest additional assets in local, regional and global equities continues to be constrained by exchange controls in Barbados and by relatively small, illiquid stock markets in the region,” Cave and Arender added. Regarding the Growth Fund’s outlook, while the year was another strong one due to its global diversification, economic crosswinds “argue more than ever for wide diversification and to look for tomorrow’s returns where valuations are most compelling, and not necessarily where yesterday’s returns were strongest.” The report noted that “the more expensive segments of the US market are vulnerable to price corrections”, but that there are still attractive valuations to be found, especially among emerging markets and developed international stocks. Fortress remains “constructive on the Fund’s high-quality, valueoriented global and Caribbean holdings.” Caribbean High-Interest Fund returns 6.7 per cent for the financial year The Fortress Caribbean High- Interest Fund also performed well, returning 6.7 per cent for the year due to “a combination of higher bond prices and healthy levels of coupon income locked in at higher rates.” The fund’s annual report noted that globally, central banks eased monetary policy and bond yields fell during the year. Corporate spreads also narrowed to reflect the perception of lower recession risk. The main index of US high-quality bonds, which included both corporates and governments, was up 12 per cent for the year. The NAV of the Accumulation shares increased to $2.2443 at September 30, 2024, up from $2.1026 last year. The distribution shares rose to $1.0729 from $1.0040. Total assets were $144 million compared to $140 million last year. The fund’s compound annual return since inception in 2002 was 3.7 per cent per year, net of all fees and expenses. The fund’s core allocation to U.S. bonds via the US$ Fortress Fixed Income Fund gained 10 per cent, and FFM’s allocation to emerging market bonds returned 19 per cent. The fund also participated in the routine issuance of Government of Barbados (GOB) treasury bills and bonds and added incrementally to medium-term GOB notes, to replace maturing GOB Series B strips and keep overall GOB exposure steady throughout the year at 13 per cent of total assets. “Some of the fund’s GOB holdings also saw better pricing during the year as final maturities naturally drew closer. Otherwise, domestic Barbados holdings performed as expected. A few new corporate issues were in progress this year but did not materialise and the opportunities for bond investment remained limited.” Regarding potential risks that could impact the High-Interest Fund going forward, Cave and Arender noted: “We think it is unlikely central banks will begin tightening policy again. Rates are still quite high, and the risk is more probably a pause that keeps rates at current levels longer than the bond market currently expects. To counter this risk the fund’s portfolio still has positions in floating rate notes whose rates will only come down as shortterm rates do.” Additional risks identified included the development and deepening of a global economic slowdown, affecting creditworthiness of corporate bonds and pushing their prices lower. In Barbados the risks remained the same: “A small market with trapped capital and dominated by the “B-” rated GOB as an issuer, does not have many opportunities for the combination of security and income that the fund requires.” Caribbean Pension Fund performs strongly for financial year The Fortress Caribbean Pension Fund had a strong financial year, with gains in all three classes of shares. The Aggressive Accumulator (AA) share returned 11.9 per cent, the Conservative Consolidator (CC) share rose by 10.8 per cent and the Capital Secure (CS) share advanced by 7.4 per cent. Since inception in 2002, the annual compound returns for the Fund’s AA, CC and CS shares have been 5.6 per cent, 5.3 per cent and 3.4 per cent per year respectively. Total net assets of the Fund increased from $402 million to $434 million during the year. “The equity allocations of the three classes of shares of the fund are primarily made up of investments in the Fortress Caribbean Growth Fund, the fixed income allocations are primarily made up of investments in the Fortress Caribbean High-Interest Fund, and the small allocations to real estate are typically made through the Eppley Caribbean Property Fund SCC (formerly Fortress Caribbean Property Fund SCC). The returns of the three shares in the Pension Fund are therefore a blend of the performance returns of these underlying holdings,” the fund’s annual report explained. The report ended with thanks to former Pension Director, René Delmas who retired and a welcome for Senior Manager, Shomari Simpson-Sealy. “Together with the team he will continue the work of building and improving the Fortress pension offering, of which this fund is a key part, and helping our thousands of clients achieve financial security. We want everyone to be able to follow in René’s footsteps to a happy retirement.” Fortress manages over Bds $800 million in assets across 12 funds with investments in regional, US, international and emerging markets. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California, home to some of the largest technology companies in the world, would be the first U.S. state to require mental health warning labels on social media sites if lawmakers pass a bill introduced Monday. The legislation sponsored by state Attorney General Rob Bonta is necessary to bolster safety for children online, supporters say, but industry officials vow to fight the measure and others like it under the First Amendment. Warning labels for social media gained swift bipartisan support from dozens of attorneys general, including Bonta, after U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called on Congress to establish the requirements earlier this year, saying social media is a contributing factor in the mental health crisis among young people. “These companies know the harmful impact their products can have on our children, and they refuse to take meaningful steps to make them safer,” Bonta said at a news conference Monday. “Time is up. It’s time we stepped in and demanded change.” State officials haven't provided details on the bill, but Bonta said the warning labels could pop up once weekly. Up to 95% of youth ages 13 to 17 say they use a social media platform, and more than a third say that they use social media “almost constantly,” according to 2022 data from the Pew Research Center. Parents’ concerns prompted Australia to pass the world’s first law banning social media for children under 16 in November. “The promise of social media, although real, has turned into a situation where they’re turning our children’s attention into a commodity,” Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, who authored the California bill, said Monday. “The attention economy is using our children and their well-being to make money for these California companies.” Lawmakers instead should focus on online safety education and mental health resources, not warning label bills that are “constitutionally unsound,” said Todd O’Boyle, a vice president of the tech industry policy group Chamber of Progress. “We strongly suspect that the courts will set them aside as compelled speech,” O’Boyle told The Associated Press. Victoria Hinks' 16-year-old daughter, Alexandra, died by suicide four months ago after being “led down dark rabbit holes” on social media that glamorized eating disorders and self-harm. Hinks said the labels would help protect children from companies that turn a blind eye to the harm caused to children’s mental health when they become addicted to social media platforms. “There's not a bone in my body that doubts social media played a role in leading her to that final, irreversible decision,” Hinks said. “This could be your story." Common Sense Media, a sponsor of the bill, said it plans to lobby for similar proposals in other states. California in the past decade has positioned itself as a leader in regulating and fighting the tech industry to bolster online safety for children. The state was the first in 2022 to bar online platforms from using users’ personal information in ways that could harm children. It was one of the states that sued Meta in 2023 and TikTok in October for deliberately designing addictive features that keep kids hooked on their platforms. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, also signed several bills in September to help curb the effects of social media on children, including one to prohibit social media platforms from knowingly providing addictive feeds to children without parental consent and one to limit or ban students from using smartphones on school campus. Federal lawmakers have held hearings on child online safety and legislation is in the works to force companies to take reasonable steps to prevent harm. The legislation has the support of X owner Elon Musk and the President-elect’s son, Donald Trump Jr. Still, the last federal law aimed at protecting children online was enacted in 1998, six years before Facebook’s founding. Remarks uttered by the CEO of T-Mobile US ( TMUS -6.12% ) on Monday weren't exactly well received by investors. Absent any other market-moving news about their stock, they traded out of the No. 3 mobile carrier assertively. By the end of the day, its price had sunk by more than 6%, notably worse than the 0.6% drop of the S&P 500 index. Fourth-quarter caution Speaking at the UBS Global Media and Telecommunications conference Monday, T-Mobile US Chief Mike Sievert essentially said his company's investors should prepare for some discouraging news coming down the pike. Specifically, he warned that certain factors will act as tailwinds on the telecom company's results, and some figures won't be as good as they were in the third quarter. Much of this has to do with an anticipated slowdown in customer additions, which Sievert described as notching a "decade-long record" in said quarter. The company's performance in this aspect of its business was indeed strong, with net "adds" of 865,000 subscribers in that period. This development was a key factor in T-Mobile raising a clutch of metrics in its full-year 2024 guidance, including customer additions, net cash from operations, and non-GAAP (adjusted) free cash flow. The market overreacts This shouldn't necessarily come as a shock to investors or telecom industry watchers. As a whole, the U.S. market is relatively saturated, and the game now is to find new income streams from existing customers -- hence, the promotion of products such as home internet service. I think a relatively softer quarter isn't surprising given how robust No. 3 was in many respects, and I feel T-Mobile US bulls should stay the course and not get discouraged.

5 Of The Fastest Navy Ships Ranked By Top SpeedLewandowski's move to Barcelona last summer was met with great anticipation and excitement from fans and pundits alike. The prolific goal scorer had proven himself as one of the best strikers in the world during his time at Bayern Munich, breaking numerous records and winning multiple titles. However, his transition to the Catalan club has not been as smooth as many had hoped.

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, also commented on the transfer, stating, "We believe this loan move will be beneficial for Naby as he looks to regain form and consistency. Ferencvaros is a club with a rich history and ambitious goals, and we wish him all the best during his time there."

The men in blue and black have historically been known for their dominance in Italian football, with numerous league titles and continental successes under their belt. However, the past few seasons have seen the club struggle to replicate the glory of their past, with inconsistent performances and managerial changes hindering their progress. This season, Inter Milan started strongly but has faltered in recent weeks, losing ground to their title rivals and facing an uphill battle to maintain their challenge for the Scudetto.

In addition to infrastructure inspection, the NRA is also paying close attention to the safety protocols and procedures followed by railway operators and staff. Comprehensive safety training sessions are being conducted to enhance the awareness and preparedness of railway personnel in dealing with emergency situations and ensuring the safe operation of trains.

The 26-year-old man had a gun believed to be the one used in the killing and writings suggesting his anger with corporate America, police officials said. He was taken into custody after police got a tip that he was eating at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference. Police identified the suspect as Luigi Mangione. Mangione was born and raised in Maryland, has ties to San Francisco, and his last known address is in Honolulu, Hawaii, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said at a news briefing. Here's the latest: Freddie Leatherbury hasn’t spoken to Mangione since they graduated in 2016 from Gilman School in Maryland. He said Mangione was a smart, friendly and athletic student who came from a wealthy family, even by the private school’s standards. Man in custody had a gun, mask and writings tying him to killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO, police say NEW YORK (AP) — Police arrested a suspect Monday in the brazen Manhattan killing of UnitedHealthcare's CEO after a quick-thinking McDonald’s employee in Pennsylvania alerted authorities to a customer who was found with a weapon, mask and writings linking him to the ambush. The chance sighting at the restaurant in Altoona led to a dramatic break in a challenging but fast-moving investigation that had captivated the public in the five days since the shooting that shook the health insurance industry. The suspect, identified by police as 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione, had a gun believed to be the one used in last Wednesday’s shooting of Brian Thompson, as well as writings suggesting anger with corporate America, police said. Mangione was taken into custody about 9:15 a.m. after police got a tip that he was eating at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, police said. "He is believed to be our person of interest in the brazen, targeted murder of Brian Thompson,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Syrian government services come to a 'complete halt' as state workers stay home after rebel takeover DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syria's prime minister said Monday that most cabinet ministers were back at work after rebels overthrew President Bashar Assad, but some state workers failed to return to their jobs, and a United Nations official said the country's public sector had come “to a complete and abrupt halt." Meanwhile, streams of refugees crossed back into Syria from neighboring countries, hoping for a more peaceful future and looking for relatives who disappeared during Assad's brutal rule. There were already signs of the difficulties ahead for the rebel alliance now in control of much of the country. The alliance is led by a former senior al-Qaida militant who severed ties with the extremist group years ago and has promised representative government and religious tolerance. The rebel command said Monday they would not tell women how to dress. “It is strictly forbidden to interfere with women’s dress or impose any request related to their clothing or appearance, including requests for modesty,” the command said in a statement on social media. As Israel advances on a Syrian buffer zone, it sees peril and opportunity TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — The dramatic downfall of Syrian President Bashar Assad presents possible danger, and an opening, for neighboring Israel. After fighting wars on multiple fronts for months, Israel is now concerned that unrest in Syria could spill over into its territory. Israel also views the end of the Assad regime as a chance to disrupt Iran's ability to smuggle weapons through Syria to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. The Israeli military over the weekend began seizing control of a demilitarized buffer zone in Syria created as part of a 1974 ceasefire between the countries. It said the move was temporary and meant to secure its border. But the incursion sparked condemnation, with critics accusing Israel of violating the ceasefire and possibly exploiting the chaos in Syria for a land grab. Israel still controls the Golan Heights that it captured from Syria during the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed — a move not recognized by most of the international community. Here’s a look at recent developments along the Syrian frontier. Trump promises to end birthright citizenship: What is it and could he do it? WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has promised to end birthright citizenship as soon as he gets into office to make good on campaign promises aiming to restrict immigration and redefining what it means to be American. But any efforts to halt the policy would face steep legal hurdles. Birthright citizenship means anyone born in the United States automatically becomes an American citizen. It's been in place for decades and applies to children born to someone in the country illegally or in the U.S. on a tourist or student visa who plans to return to their home country. It's not the practice of every country, and Trump and his supporters have argued that the system is being abused and that there should be tougher standards for becoming an American citizen. But others say this is a right enshrined in the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, it would be extremely difficult to overturn and even if it's possible, it's a bad idea. Veteran Daniel Penny is acquitted in NYC subway chokehold case over Jordan Neely's death NEW YORK (AP) — A Marine veteran who used a chokehold on an agitated subway rider was acquitted on Monday in a death that became a prism for differing views about public safety, valor and vigilantism. A Manhattan jury cleared Daniel Penny of criminally negligent homicide in Jordan Neely ’s 2023 death. A more serious manslaughter charge was dismissed last week because the jury deadlocked on that count. Penny, who had shown little expression during the trial, briefly smiled as the verdict was read. While celebrating later with his attorneys, he said he felt “great.” Both applause and anger erupted in the courtroom, and Neely's father and two supporters were ushered out after audibly reacting. Another person also left, wailing with tears. “It really, really hurts,” Neely’s father, Andre Zachery, said outside the courthouse. “I had enough of this. The system is rigged." Zelenskyy open to Western troops providing security for end to war in Ukraine KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday that he's open to the potential deployment of Western troops in Ukraine to guarantee the country’s security as part of a broad effort to end the almost three-year war with Russia. The deployment would be a step toward Ukraine joining NATO, Zelenskyy said in a post on his Telegram channel. “But before that, we must have a clear understanding of when Ukraine will be in the European Union and when Ukraine will be in NATO,” Zelenskyy said. His proposals tread a delicate diplomatic path amid international efforts to find a way of ending Europe’s biggest conflict since World War II at a time when Russia has gained an upper hand in the fighting. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is seeking to bring about a ceasefire and met with Zelenskyy in Paris on Saturday. But Zelenskyy said Monday that he would approach outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden about Ukraine’s possible NATO membership because he's still in office, while Trump doesn't yet have “legal rights” to decide on the matter. Jay-Z says lawsuit accusing him of raping a child at awards after-party is part of an extortion ploy NEW YORK (AP) — Jay-Z says a rape allegation made against him is part of an extortion attempt. A woman who previously sued Sean “Diddy” Combs, alleging she was raped at an awards show after-party in 2000 when she was 13, amended the lawsuit Sunday to include a new allegation that Jay-Z was also at the party and participated in the sexual assault. The 24-time Grammy award winning rapper, producer and music mogul called the allegations “idiotic” and “heinous in nature" in a statement released by Roc Nation, one of his companies. His lawyer also argued Monday that his accuser, who is only identified as Jane Doe, should have to reveal her identity, or have her lawsuit dismissed outright. Attorney Alex Spiro said in a filing in Manhattan federal court that the woman hasn’t provided any specific evidence to justify her anonymity and that her “vague assertions of potential harm fall far short of the stringent requirements” under law. Netanyahu is set to take the witness stand for the first time in his corruption trial in Israel JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to take to the witness stand Tuesday for the first time in his trial on corruption allegations, a pivotal point in the drawn-out proceedings that comes as he wages war in Gaza and faces an international arrest warrant for war crimes charges. Netanyahu is on trial at home on accusations of fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in three separate matters. Netanyahu denies wrongdoing, but his appearance on the witness stand will be a low point in his decades-long political career, standing in contrast to the image of a sophisticated, respected leader he has tried to cultivate. The trial will take up a chunk of Netanyahu's time at a crucial point for Israel. While he makes his case for weeks from the stand, he will still be tasked with managing the war in Gaza, maintaining a fragile ceasefire with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and keeping tabs on threats from the wider Middle East, including Iran. It will be the first time an Israeli prime minister has taken the stand as a criminal defendant. Netanyahu has repeatedly sought to delay the proceedings, citing the war in Gaza and security concerns. The judges ordered the trial to resume Tuesday, moving the proceedings to an underground chamber in a Tel Aviv court as a security precaution. Netanyahu's appearance in the courtroom will also draw attention to other legal issues in the Israeli leader's orbit. Close advisers in his office are embroiled in a separate series of scandals surrounding leaked classified information and doctored documents. While Netanyahu is not suspected of direct involvement in those, they could weaken his public image. 'Emilia Pérez' leads Golden Globe nominations with 10, followed by 'The Brutalist' and 'Conclave' Jacques Audiard’s audacious musical “Emilia Pérez,” about a Mexican drug lord who undergoes gender affirming surgery, led nominations to the 82nd Golden Globes on Monday, scoring 10 nods to lead it over other contenders like the musical smash “Wicked,” the papal thriller “Conclave” and the postwar epic “The Brutalist.” The nominations for the Globes, which will be televised by CBS and streamed on Paramount+ on Jan. 5, were announced on Monday morning by Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut. The embattled Globes, which are no longer presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are still in comeback mode after years of scandal and organizational upheaval. Working in the Globes favor this year: a especially starry field of nominees. Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Denzel Washington, Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Glen Powell and Selena Gomez all scored nominations. The young Donald Trump drama “The Apprentice” also landed nominations for its two central performances, by Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn. The president elect has called “The Apprentice” a “politically disgusting hatchet job" made by "human scum.” How much the recent president election will figure into Hollywood's awards season remains to be seen. In the season's first awards ceremony, the Gotham Awards, Trump went unmentioned but sometimes alluded to. Stan also received a nomination Monday for the dark comedy “A Different Man.”

Brock Bowers of the Las Vegas Raiders moved past Pro Football Hall of Famer Mike Ditka on Sunday to set the NFL record for most receiving yards by a tight end in his rookie season and also set the record for most receptions by a rookie, regardless of position. Bowers has 108 receptions to top the mark set last season by Puka Nacua (105) of the Los Angeles Rams. Bowers' yardage stands at 1,144 after having seven receptions for 77 yards in a 25-10 road victory over the New Orleans Saints. Bowers also set a franchise receptions for catches in a season, surpassing Darren Waller (107 in 2020). "It's awesome," Bowers said of the records in a postgame interview on Fox. "You never know what to expect coming up to the next level. It's been everything and more." Bowers' third catch on Sunday -- a 13-yard grab late in the second quarter against the Saints -- pushed his season total to 1,087 yards. Ditka totaled 1,076 receiving yards in 14 games with the Chicago Bears in 1961. Bowers, 22, set the record for receptions by a rookie tight end earlier this season by eclipsing the total of 86 reeled in by Sam LaPorta of the Detroit Lions in 2023. Bowers was selected by the Raiders with the 13th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. Despite all his catches, he has just four scoring receptions. While with Georgia, Bowers was the first back-to-back winner of the Mackey Award (2022, 2023), which is given to the top tight end in college football. --Field Level Media

The league has witnessed the rise and fall of countless footballing legends, but only a select few have managed to reach the incredible milestone of 600 appearances. As of now, there have been just four players who have achieved this remarkable feat, with Francesco Totti leading the pack as one of the most iconic figures in the history of Italian football.

Few presidents have come as far as fast in national politics as Jimmy Carter . In 1974, he was nearing the end of his single term as governor of Georgia when he told the world he wanted to be president. Two years later, he was the president-elect. Although his name recognition nationally was only 2% at the time of his announcement, Carter believed he could meet enough people personally to make a strong showing in the early presidential caucuses and primaries. He embarked on a 37-state tour, making more than 200 speeches before any of the other major candidates had announced. When voting began in Iowa and New Hampshire in the winter of 1976, Carter emerged the winner in both states. He rode that momentum all the way to the presidential nomination and held on to win a close contest in the general election. His career as a highly active former president lasted four full decades and ended only with his death Sunday in his hometown of Plains, Ga. He was 100 and had lived longer than any other U.S. president, battling cancer in both his brain and liver in his 90s. A life that bridged political eras James Earl Carter Jr. was the 39th U.S. president, elected as a Democrat displacing the incumbent Republican, Gerald Ford, in 1976. Carter would serve a single tumultuous term in the White House, beset by inflation, energy shortages, intraparty challenges and foreign crises. But he managed to win the nomination for a second term. He lost his bid for reelection to Republican Ronald Reagan in a landslide in 1980. Thereafter, he worked with Habitat for Humanity and traveled the globe as an indefatigable advocate for peace and human rights. He was given the U.N. Prize in the Field of Human Rights in 1998 and awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Carter was the first president from the Deep South elected since the Civil War. He entered politics at a time when Democrats still dominated in his home state and region. He had begun his career as a naval officer in the submarine corps, but in 1953 he left the service to take over the family peanut business when his father died. He later served four years in Georgia's state legislature before making his first bid for governor in 1966. In that contest, he finished behind another Democrat, Lester Maddox, a populist figure known for brandishing a pickax handle to confront civil rights protesters outside his Atlanta restaurant. Carter shared much of the traditional white Southern cultural identity. But he was also noted for his support for integration and the Civil Rights Movement led by fellow Georgian Martin Luther King Jr. Four years after losing to Maddox, Carter was elected his successor and declared in his inaugural speech that "the time for racial discrimination is over." Time magazine would feature him on its cover four months later, making him a symbol of the "New South." And as his term as governor ended, he was all in on a presidential bid. But he did not burst onto the national stage so much as he crept up onto it, appearing before small groups in farming communities and elsewhere far from the big media centers. A meteoric rise to the White House Beyond his earnest image and rhetoric, Carter also had a savvy game plan based on the new presidential nominating rules that the Democratic Party had adopted in the early 1970s. Carter's team, led by campaign manager Hamilton Jordan, mastered this new road map, with Carter climbing from a strong showing in the still-new Iowa caucuses to a clean win in New Hampshire's primary. So though in January 1976 he was the first choice of only 4% of Democrats nationally, he won the first two events and leveraged that attention to capture the imagination of voters in other regions. Carter shut out segregationist champion George Wallace in the Southern primaries and also dominated in the industrial states of the North and Midwest. Democrats held 48 primaries or caucuses around the United States that year, and Carter won 30, with no other candidate winning more than five. Wherever he went, he was able to connect with rural voters and evangelicals wherever they were to be found — doing well in big cities but also in the sparsely populated parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania. While Carter's juggernaut lost momentum in the summer and fall, with Republican President Gerald Ford nearly closing the polling gap by Election Day, the Georgian held on to win 50% of the popular vote in November. By winning in his home state and everywhere else in the South (save only Virginia) while holding on to enough of the key population centers in the Northeast and Great Lakes regions, Carter was able to cobble together nearly 300 Electoral College votes without winning California, Illinois or Michigan. Troubles in office The surprisingly modest margin of Carter's victory over Ford augured more difficulties ahead. And as well as the Carter persona may have suited the national mood in 1976, it did not fit well in the Washington he found in 1977. All presidential candidates who "run against Washington" find it necessary to adjust their tactics if and when they are elected. But the former peanut farmer and his campaign staff known as the "Georgia mafia" never seemed to lose faith in the leverage they thought they had as outsiders. Almost immediately upon taking office, Carter encountered difficulties with various power centers in Congress. He and his tight circle of aides brought along from Georgia and the campaign were not attuned to congressional customs or prerogatives, and a variety of their agenda priorities ran afoul of their own party's preferences. A case in point was a "hit list" of Western water projects that the Carterites regarded as needless pork barrel spending. For a raft of Democratic senators and representatives facing reelection in thirsty states and districts, the list came as a declaration of war. Although Congress fought Carter to a draw on the projects, many of these Western seats would be lost to Republican challengers in 1978 and 1980. Carter did have signal successes in brokering a historic peace deal between Israel and Egypt and in securing Senate ratification of his treaties ceding the Panama Canal to Panama. He also managed to achieve significant reforms in regulations — especially those affecting energy production and transportation — that would eventually lower consumer prices. Carter had taken office amid historically high inflation and energy prices that had persisted since the Arab oil embargo of 1973. Carter appointed a new chair of the Federal Reserve, Paul Volcker, whose tight money policies eventually tamed inflation but also triggered a recession and the highest unemployment rates since the Great Depression. Along the way, there was more grief on the oil front as Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979 caused not only a price spike but long lines at the pump — worse than in 1973. Carter and the Democrats paid a price, suffering more than the usual losses for the president's party in the 1978 midterm elections, which greatly reduced Democratic margins in both the House and the Senate. Yet the Iranian crisis had even worse consequences. The revolution saw the overthrow of the Shah, a longtime ally of the U.S., and the installation of a stern theocratic regime led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, a fierce critic of the United States. When Carter agreed to grant the Shah a visa to receive cancer treatments in the U.S., young followers of the ayatollah overran the U.S. Embassy in Tehran . Fifty-two Americans were taken hostage for 444 days. Carter's efforts to free them were unavailing. An airborne raid intended to free them ended in catastrophe in the Iranian desert, leaving eight U.S. service members dead after a collision of aircraft on the ground. Afghanistan becomes an issue Yet another blow was dealt to Carter's standing when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to prop up its client regime there. Opposing that aggression was popular, but Carter's decision to retaliate by having the U.S. boycott the 1980 Olympics in Moscow was less so. Carter was able to use the hostage crisis to his advantage in suppressing the challenge to his nomination mounted by Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts. Carter refused to debate Kennedy and made the primaries a kind of referendum on the Iranian situation. Enough Democrats rallied to his side that Kennedy's bid, a favorite cause of liberal activists and organized labor, fell far short. Still, it contributed to the weakness of Carter's standing in the general election. And what had worked against a challenger from the Democratic left did not work when Carter faced one from the Republican right. Ronald Reagan was a former two-term governor of California who had sought the nomination twice before, and he did not begin 1980 as the consensus choice of his party. But he wove a complex set of issues into a fabric with broad appeal. He proposed sweeping tax cuts as a tonic for the economy, more spending on defense, a more aggressive foreign policy and, just as important, a return to the traditional values of "faith, freedom, family, work and neighborhood." He also opposed abortion and busing for racial integration and favored school prayer — the three hottest buttons in social policy at the time. After a come-from-behind win in New Hampshire and a sweep of the Southern primaries, Reagan never looked back. His triumph at the Republican National Convention in Detroit set the tone for his campaign. The election looked close at Labor Day and even into October. But the single debate the two camps agreed to , held on Oct. 28, 1980, the week before the election, was a clear win for the challenger. Carter failed in his attempts to paint Reagan as an extremist. The Republican managed to be reassuring and upbeat even as he kept up his attacks on Carter's handling of the economy and on the rest of Carter's record. The polls broke sharply in the final days, and in November, Reagan captured nearly all the Southern states that Carter had carried four years earlier and won the 1980 presidential election with 489 Electoral College votes. Carter conceded before the polls had even closed on the West Coast. Reassessment in retrospect Historians have generally not rated Carter's presidency highly, and he left office with his Gallup poll approval rating in the low 30s. But there has been a steady upward trajectory in assessments of his presidency in recent years, and his Gallup approval rating has climbed back above 50% and has remained there among the public at large. This reflects the work of several Carter biographers and former aides and the natural comparison with the presidents who have followed him. In 2018, Stuart E. Eizenstat, Carter's chief domestic policy adviser, published President Carter: The White House Years , which historians have praised both as a primary source and as an assessment of Carter's term. In it, Eizenstat wrote that Carter "was not a great president, but he was a good and productive one. He delivered results, many of which were realized only after he left office. He was a man of almost unyielding principle. Yet his greatest virtue was at once his most serious fault for a president in an American democracy of divided powers." As far back as 2000, historian Douglas Brinkley wrote that in the first 20 years after Carter lost the presidency, he had become "renowned the world over as the epitome of the caring, compassionate, best sort of American statesman ... an exemplar of behavior for all national leaders in retirement." A new life out of office But the greatest factor in Carter's rising reputation was his own performance in his post-presidential career. He worked with Habitat for Humanity to rehabilitate homes for low-income families. He taught at Emory University and established his own nonprofit, the Carter Center . And over the ensuing decades, he published more than two dozen books and became an international advocate for peace, democratic reforms and humanitarian causes. As former president, Carter did not shy from controversy, particularly when it came to the Middle East, the region that gave him his greatest foreign policy achievement and also his most damaging setback as president. He opposed the Gulf War in 1991 and the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, and he angered many when he likened Israel's treatment of Palestinians to apartheid in South Africa. He also riled many Americans by suggesting that opposition to President Barack Obama was rooted in racism. More recently, he earned new admirers and detractors alike with his public disapproval of then-President Donald Trump.Taiwan, a self-governing island with its own democratic government, has struggled to assert its sovereignty in the face of Chinese pressure. Oleksandr Zinchenko, the Ukrainian dynamo who has been a revelation since joining Arsenal, was also absent from training today. Zinchenko's energy, work rate, and versatility have made him a fan favorite, and his absence will be keenly felt on the pitch. Whether his absence is due to injury or other reasons remains to be seen, but his presence will be crucial for Arsenal's success in the upcoming matches.

Labor’s Trade Minister Don Farrell has not yet spoken to the incoming US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick amid concerns about US trade tariffs on Australia. President-elect Donald Trump has touted universal trade tariffs of between 10 and 20 per cent, creating concern about possible consequences to the Australian economy. Asked by Sky News Political Editor if he had spoken with Mr Lutnick since his appointment, Mr Farrell said he had not. “No, no. I have put in a request to have a discussion. It’s, I think, good to make contact in advance of the change,” Mr Farrell said. “We will work with incoming President Trump. I’ve reached out already to the commerce secretary to contact him.” Mr Farrell outlined that Australia's trade relationship with the United States was asymmetrical, with Australia purchasing twice as much from the US as it sells. He acknowledged the imposition of a trade tariff would “not be good” for the Australian economy as one in four jobs rely on trade. However, he added “We are not at that stage yet” and pointed to remarks apparently made by Mr Lutnick that “some things that are said before the election aren’t the way it goes”. “I’d argue that we should calm things down a bit, not panic and do what we’ve done with the China relationship, which is cool, calm negotiation to try and get the best result for Australian farmers, Australian manufacturers, Australian miners.” Prime Minister Albanese recently revealed he did not discuss trade tariffs during his phone call with Trump after the US election . Pressed on whether he was confident Australia would receive an exemption from tariffs, the Prime Minister said he did not want to pre-empt those decisions. “We'll advocate for Australia's national interests. That's my job to do so, because one in four jobs in Australia is trade-dependent,” he said. “We'll continue to advocate for free and fair trade. Donald Trump will take office on January 20. I'm not going to pre-empt what his administration might do. He clearly has an agenda. We'll wait and see how that plays out." More to come. However, the revelation that there are still five individuals who have not faced disciplinary action raises questions about the effectiveness and thoroughness of the anti-corruption efforts. It is crucial for the authorities to expedite the investigation process and ensure that all corrupt officials are held accountable for their wrongdoings.

Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Mahesh Sawant won the Mahim constituency by raking in 50,213 votes. Incumbent Shiv Sena MLA Sada Sarvankar received 48,897 votes and Amit came third with 33,062 votes. Celebrations erupted for Sawant at Shivaji Park, the heart of the undivided Shiv Sena and home to Sena Bhavan - now Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT)'s headquarters. A short distance away, at the party head office, Sena (UBT) leaders were facing uncertainty about the future. Defending the impact of the results on the Thackeray family's political legacy, incumbent South Central MP Anil Desai told TOI, "There were multiple factors deciding this election statewide. This includes the drawback of our alliance partners and Ladki Bahin scheme. Sawant was facing two strong opponents in Mahim assembly constituency and won." Speaking about neighbouring Worli where Aaditya Thackeray won with a low margin, he said, "Aaditya was a star campaigner who had to take care of not only his campaign but also that of other candidates, which impacted the results there." MNS workers were taken aback that their party chief's son lost to a new entrant in the state polls. BJP, which had initially backed Amit, later put all the weight behind Sarvankar when he refused to back down. MNS leader Yashwant Killedar, who was closely involved in Amit's campaigns, said, "This defeat is the result of Muslim votes for Sena (UBT) and freebies by Sarvankar before elections and the Ladki Bahin scheme. We also suspect EVM tampering. On our part, we reached the doorsteps of our voters." When asked what the loss means for Amit's political future, Killedar said, "This is not the end. He remains a popular leader. As a party, we will decide the further course of action." Sanjay Bhagat, Sena (UBT)'s Mahim shakha pramukh, said, "What worked for Sawant was his common man image. The son of a mill worker fought against the son of a party chief. About Sarvankar, people had long-standing issues around redevelopment that were unresolved, and Sawant had strong local connections in the assembly for voters to trust him to resolve them." The next challenge, Bhagat said, now for those like him is to hold the party together at the shakha levels as chances of cadres shifting pose a significant threat moving forward.

Such sanctions would undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for the club, its players, its fans, and the broader footballing community. The prospect of Manchester City being demoted would send shockwaves through the football world and would serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of flouting the rules.

周长强 Appointed as Party Secretary of Qionghai City in Hainan Province, Promoted to Department-level PositionIt has been more than 30 years since a team held as big a lead as Liverpool after 12 rounds of the Premier League. Not that Arne Slot is getting too excited about an eight-point advantage before even hitting December. “It’s nice to have this position,” the Liverpool manager said Sunday after Mohamed Salah's second-half double inspired a 3-2 come-from-behind win at Southampton, “but we are definitely not getting carried away.” Only Manchester United's class of 1993-94 — under Alex Ferguson — has had a larger lead than Slot's Liverpool at this stage of a Premier League campaign. The title stayed at Old Trafford that season. It's those kind of glory days that Ruben Amorim is trying to recreate after taking charge of United and the Portuguese coach's tenure could hardly have gotten off to a better start. Only 81 seconds had elapsed before United marked Amorim's first game at the helm with a goal from Marcus Rashford at Ipswich. United couldn't hold out and a 1-1 draw against a team destined to be battling against relegation underlined the scale of Amorim's task to turn around the fortunes of a fallen giant in English soccer. “It was really hard for them," Amorim said of United's players. "They were thinking what to do — it was not fluid, which is normal after just two training sessions, but they tried hard. “They have so much space to improve. But after a draw, you never feel the good things.” SALAH TO THE RESCUE Salah moved onto 10 goals for the league campaign, second behind Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (12), and Liverpool now has 10 victories in 12 league games. It's a start to the season Slot can only have dreamed about after joining from Feyenoord for the tough job of replacing Jurgen Klopp. Helping Liverpool is the alarming form of defending champion Man City, whose stunning third straight league loss — 4-0 at home to Tottenham on Saturday — was a fifth defeat in a row in all competitions. Second-place City heads to Liverpool next weekend and could be 11 points behind the Reds after that match at Anfield. Liverpool was trailing 2-1 at Southampton when Salah equalized in the 65th after running onto a long pass forward from Ryan Gravenberch. The Egypt forward then converted a penalty in the 83rd after a handball by Yukinari Sugawara and nearly had a hat trick at St. Mary’s stadium — only to hit the post in the final minutes. Liverpool’s win owed as much to the defensive inadequacies of last-place Southampton as any excellence from Slot’s visitors. The Reds were gifted the opening goal, though Dominik Szoboszlai’s finish was excellent after he collected a weak clearance from Flynn Downes and curled a shot in off the post. It started after Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy rolled the ball out to a player who was swarmed by Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez at the edge of the area. Southampton fought back, with Adam Armstrong converting a penalty in the 42nd minute after Andy Robertson tripped Tyler Dibling just inside the area and then setting up Mateus Fernandes to stroke home in the 56th. Salah came to Liverpool’s rescue, though, and again there will be question marks about McCarthy, who raced out of his goal to take Gravenberch’s pass only to be beaten to the ball by Salah. Salah was able to run with the ball into an empty net and was celebrating again after converting the match-clinching penalty past McCarthy. “It is a great feeling but it is the beginning of the season,” Szoboszlai said of Liverpool’s big lead. “We just need to continue and not think where the other teams are.” AMORIM'S TWEAKS For his first match with United, Amorim started with a 3-4-3 formation — picking Rashford as the sole striker and Amad Diallo, a winger, as one of the wing backs. Those big calls were quickly vindicated. Off United's first attack, Diallo was sent clear down the right and crossed for Rashford to poke home from close range. Omari Hutchinson equalized in the 43rd minute for Ipswich, which is likely to be battling relegation this season but was more than a match for United. It highlighted the challenge facing Amorim to bring United a first title since 2013. That surely won't happen this season — United is in 12th place, already 15 points behind Liverpool.

Syrians poured into streets in celebration on Sunday after a stunning rebel advance reached the capital, ending the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule . Russian state news agencies were reporting that President Bashar Assad and his family had arrived in Moscow and were given asylum. Russia said Assad left the country after negotiations with rebel groups and that he had given instructions to transfer power peacefully. Joyful crowds gathered in central squares in Damascus, waving the Syrian revolutionary flag. Others ransacked the presidential palace and residence. Abu Mohammed al-Golani , a former al-Qaida commander who cut ties with the group years ago leads the biggest rebel faction in Syria and is poised to chart the country’s future. He made his first public appearance since fighters entered the Damascus suburbs Saturday, at the capital’s sprawling Umayyad Mosque, and called himself by his given name, Ahmad al-Sharaa. He said Assad’s fall was “a victory to the Islamic nation.” The rapidly developing events have shaken the region. Lebanon said it was closing all its land border crossings with Syria except for one that links Beirut with Damascus. Jordan closed a border crossing with Syria, too. Israel has issued warnings to villages in southern Syria and its forces seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights. Here's the Latest: The Israeli military said on Sunday it was reinforcing a barrier along its border with Syria as part of its “enhanced preparedness” in the area following the fall of the Assad regime. Israel released images of the construction, which showed bulldozers digging what appeared to be a trench. The army said in a statement that the barrier was named “New East.” Satellite images analyzed by The Associated Press show that as early as September, Israel began building what could be a new road right along the so-called Alpha Line that separates the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Syria . The United Nations confirmed that Israeli troops entered the demilitarized zone during the work. Over the weekend, the Israeli military sent additional troops to the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights to bolster Israel’s presence along the border with Syria. Russian state news agencies reported that ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad has arrived in Moscow with his family and been given asylum. The agencies, Tass and RIA, cited an unidentified Kremlin source. The Associated Press was not immediately able to verify the reports but had contacted the Kremlin for comment. CAIRO — The Arab League on Sunday condemned Israel for taking advantage of Syrian President Bashar Assad's downfall by moving into more Syrian territory. Hours after Assad’s overthrow, Israel announced it had seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights that was established by a cease-fire agreement with Syria in 1974. In a statement, the Arab League said Israel illegally sought to occupy more territories. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the 50-year-old agreement regarding Syrian territory had collapsed and that Syrian troops had abandoned their positions, necessitating Israel taking over as a “temporary defensive position.” UNITED NATIONS — The United Nations secretary-general is marking the “fall of the dictatorial regime” in Syria and says the future of the country is “is a matter for the Syrians to determine.” A statement by Antonio Guterres also called for calm and the protection of the rights of all Syrians as well as of diplomatic and consular facilities in Syria. He said there is much work ahead to ensure an “orderly political transition to renewed institutions,” and he called on the international community to ensure that “any political transition is inclusive and comprehensive and that it meets the legitimate aspirations of the people of Syria, in all their diversity.” KYIV, Ukraine - Ukraine’s top diplomat on Sunday responded to Assad’s ouster by describing him as a “dictator” who relied on Russia to prop up his rule - a reference to the military campaign Moscow has waged in Syria since September 2015, teaming up with Iran to allow Assad’s government to fight armed opposition groups and reclaim control over most of the country. "Assad has fallen. This has always been and will be the case with all dictators who bet on Putin. He always betrays those who rely on him,” foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post on X. In a separate update on the social network, Sybiha said Kyiv was ready to take steps towards restoring relations with Syria, severed months into Russia’s full-scale invasion of the neighboring state. Kyiv broke off diplomatic ties after Damascus in June 2022 recognized Kremlin-occupied parts of eastern Ukraine as independent territories, in a move welcomed by Moscow and decried by the West as a clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty. JERUSALEM — The Israeli military has issued a warning to residents of five villages and towns in southern Syria to stay inside their homes for their safety. “The fighting in your area is forcing the IDF to act,” the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman said on X. The military didn’t respond to questions. Earlier, Israel said its troops had seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights established in 1974, saying it was to protect Israeli residents after Syrian troops abandoned their positions. Defense Minister Israel Katz said on X that the IDF has been instructed to “seize the buffer zone and control points to ensure the protection of all Israeli communities in the Golan Heights – Jewish and Druze – so that they are not exposed to threats from the other side.” Israel captured the Golan in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed it. The international community, except for the United States, views it as occupied. BEIRUT - The leader of the largest insurgent group in Syria visited the Syrian capital’s sprawling Umayyad Mosque and declared that the victory against President Bashar Assad “is a victory to the Islamic nation.” Ahmad al-Sharaa, who was formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, made his first public appearance and remarks since fighters entered Damascus. He told hundreds of people at the historic mosque that Assad had made Syria “a farm for Iran’s greed.” He added that Assad made Syria a base for the illegal amphetamine Captagon that brought cash to Assad’s circles. Al-Sharaa, the leader of the jihadi Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, said Sunday that the victory was achieved because of “God and the blood of martyrs.” He said that he left Syria 20 years ago and since then his heart has longed for this movement. AMMAN, Jordan — The vast majority of the Jordanian people are welcoming the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the success of the Syrian revolution. “There is no doubt that I felt overwhelming joy at the fall of the Assad regime," said Badi Al-Rafaia, Engineer, union activist and member of the Islamic Action Front. "There is no doubt that we are happy with what happened in Syria, happy with the success of the revolution, happy with the Syrian people getting rid of an oppressor and criminal who treated the Syrian people and made the Syrian state a failed state.” Al-Rafaia said that Jordan is benefiting from what happened in Syria, and "we hope that Jordan will help the revolution succeed and not work against it.” Amman resident Muhab al-Majali said the fall of the Assad regime is “The end of every unjust and tyrannical rule, and more than that, it mortgaged the country and its people to the Iranians, who abandoned it in minutes... I believe that the future is beautiful and prosperous for the Syrians.” BERLIN — The International Committee of the Red Cross is calling for safe humanitarian access and protection of civilians in Syria after the fall of Bashir Assad’s government. “Our teams in Syria, including in Damascus, have been closely monitoring the fast-evolving security and humanitarian situation in coordination with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent,” the ICRC’s head of delegation in Syria, Stephan Sakalian, said in a written statement Sunday. The ICRC is “responding wherever possible, with further efforts underway, as hundreds of thousands of people need care and humanitarian assistance,” he said. Sakalian called “on all parties to urgently enable safe and unhindered access for medical and humanitarian workers to reach those in need, to protect civilians, and to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law.” BAGHDAD — The Iraqi government said in a statement Sunday that it “supports all international and regional efforts seeking to open a dialogue” for Syria “leading to the adoption of a pluralistic constitution that preserves the human and civil rights of Syrians, and supports cultural, ethnic and religious diversity.” The statement from government spokesperson Bassem al-Awadi, said that Iraq understands “the necessity of respecting the free will of all Syrians, and stresses that the security of Syria, the unity of its territories, and the preservation of its independence are of utmost importance, not only for Iraq but also for its connection to the security and stability of the region.” It cautioned against “interfering in Syria’s internal affairs, or supporting one party for the benefit of another.” Iraq, which has a close relationship with Iran - once a strong ally of former Syrian President Bashar Assad - has taken in some 2,000 Syrian army soldiers who fled the country amid the advance of armed opposition groups. CAIRO — The head of Yemen’s internationally recognized government welcomed the fall of the government of President Bashar Assad of Syria. “It’s a historic moment,” Rashad al-Alimi, who chairs the ruling presidential council, wrote on X platform of Assad’s downfall. “It’s time for the Iranian regime to stop meddling in Yemen, respect its sovereignty and identity.” Al-Alimi, who is backed by Saudi Arabia, was referring to Iran’s support of Houthi rebels who are at war with Yemen’s internationally recognized government for a decade. DAMASCUS — Families wandered through the high-ceilinged halls of the presidential palace in Damascus on Sunday, along with some armed men. Some paused to take family portraits or selfies on the few remaining couches against the backdrop of mosaiced walls, while others walked out with chairs and other items under their arms. On the massive parking lot out front, cars drove in circles honking ecstatically. In central Damascus’ Umayyad Square, drivers passing by also honked jubilantly, while young men piled onto a tank abandoned in the square. But for some the celebration was bittersweet. “I am very happy, but this happiness will not be completed until I can see my son out of the prison and know where is he is,” said Damascus resident Bassam Masr. “I have been searching for him for two hours - he has been detained for 13 years.” TEL AVIV, Israel – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israeli forces have seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights established by a 1974 ceasefire agreement with Syria. He spoke from an overlook near the border between Syria and the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, after Syrian rebels tore through the country and dramatically ended Assad’s rule on Sunday morning. Netanyahu said the 50-year-old agreement had collapsed and that Syrian troops had abandoned their positions, necessitating the Israeli takeover as a “temporary defensive position.” Israel captured the Golan Heights in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed it. The international community, except for the United States, views it as occupied Syrian territory. Satellite images analyzed by the Associated Press show that as early as September, Israel began construction of what could possibly be a new road right along the so-called Alpha Line that separates the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Syria . The United Nations confirmed that Israeli troops entered the demilitarized zone during the work. The United Nations maintains a peacekeeping force in the demilitarized zone called the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, or UNDOF, with around 1,100 peacekeepers from Fiji, India, Kazakhstan, Nepal, and Uruguay. After the 1973 Mideast war, the U.N. Secretary Council voted to create UNDOF to patrol a roughly 400 square kilometer (155 square mile) demilitarized zone and maintain the peace there. DAMASCUS, Syria — An Associated Press journalist in Damascus reported airstrikes in the area of the Mezzeh military airport, southwest of the capital Sunday. The airport has previously been targeted in Israeli airstrikes, but it was not immediately clear who launched Sunday's strike. The Israeli military refused to comment on the airport strike. Israel often does not publicly claim responsibility for attacks in Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, reported that Israeli warplanes also targeted warehouses belonging to the Syrian army’s Fourth Division and another former military site outside of Damascus Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday, the Israeli military sent additional troops to the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights to bolster Israel’s presence along the border between Israel and Syria. Agricultural areas along the border were declared closed military zones and some schools shifted to online classes in anticipation of unrest. As the defending champions, Juventus will be looking to assert their dominance and send a clear message to their rivals that they are a force to be reckoned with. Meanwhile, Manchester City will be eager to showcase their attacking prowess and prove that they have what it takes to compete with the best in Europe.

By providing military gear and equipment to 18-year-old citizens from Ukraine, the United States demonstrates its solidarity with the brave individuals who are courageously defending their country's freedom and sovereignty on the front lines. An Italian renewable energy giant and Japan's largest oil and gas company are plugging into Australia's clean energy resources under the banner of a new company. Potentia Energy will be launched at the Sydney Opera House on Monday as an Australian renewable energy firm co-owned by Rome-headquartered Enel Green Power and INPEX. With rights in place for a development pipeline of over seven gigawatts across the country, Potentia is most focused on developing and acquiring assets in NSW, Queensland and Western Australia, chief executive Werther Esposito told AAP. The company is not deterred by the risk of political change, with opinion polls favouring the coalition ahead of the 2025 federal election. "The energy transition will go ahead in any case. There could be an acceleration or slowing down in the process," Mr Esposito said. "Renewables represent, from a technical and economic perspective, the solution for climate change," he said. "I don't think any government could deny that today wind and solar are cheaper than other technologies, and are faster in reaching the phase of deployment and construction and then supply of renewable energy." NSW had suffered some planning delays that had hit investment but there had been a "strong improvement" in the past 12 to 18 months, he said. The company also has a stake in Queensland, particularly in the north's Copperstring area, where the recently elected LNP government has pledged to stick by a massive transmission project begun under Labor. Enel won the bidding in 2024 to develop renewable energy to power a vanadium mining and processing project, which is one of a number of giant resources projects intended to be connected to the $9 billion Copperstring transmission line from Townsville to Mt Isa. WA offered a "huge opportunity" for the deployment of wind farms and battery energy storage systems, Mr Esposito said. With a decades-long footprint in Australia's north and west, INPEX is Japan's largest fossil fuel exploration and production company. Under pressure to reduce its global contribution to climate change, INPEX is already developing the production of liquid hydrogen and ammonia. "They elected Australia as the market to start diversification of the energy mix and huge investment in renewables," Mr Esposito said. "Of course in this regard, Australia is the place to be," he said. Enel and INPEX joined forces in a share purchase agreement in 2023, with the renewables business operating plants comprising 310 megawatts of solar capacity across South Australia and Victoria and a 75MW wind farm in Western Australia. A 93MW solar farm is under commissioning in Victoria and financial close was recently announced for a hybrid 98MW solar and 20MW battery project in NSW. But with international firms lining up to exploit clean energy resources, Australians living alongside projects are demanding a share of future profits through community funds, power bill rebates and other benefits. "The energy transition should be just. To be just it means that you need to support the communities and involve the communities in a proper way," Mr Esposito said. He said Enel was proud of its legacy in providing support to areas facing a changing landscape and the impact of new infrastructure, including community funds, a focus on local hiring and providing training to support new jobs. "It's an approach that is, for us, absolutely a pillar of our strategy," he said. By cultivating a style of football that aligns with the nation's football heritage, China can carve out a unique identity on the global stage.

( ) shares are in the green today. Again. Shares in the (ASX: XJO) company closed yesterday at $256.73. In early morning trade on Wednesday, they are changing hands for $259.01 apiece, up 0.9%. For some context, the ASX 200 is down 0.3% at this same time. As you can see on the chart above, Pro Medicus shares have been shooting the lights out of late, up 192% over the past year. And if that's not enough, the stock also trades on a slender 0.2% fully franked trailing yield. Which brings us to the sale of two million shares by the company's co-founders. This morning, the health imaging company media speculations that its co-founders, Sam Hupert and Anthony Hall, both sold one million Pro Medicus shares at yesterday's closing price of $256.73 a share. In other words, they've each just pocketed a cool $256.7 million. Hall and Hupert launched the company in 1983. Pro Medicus listed on the ASX 17 years later, in October 2000. While the stock has broadly trended higher since then, it didn't lift off right away. In August 2001, you could have bought shares for just 90 cents each. If only! The board noted that the co-founders' share sale "was in response to strong approaches from a number of high-quality funds", and that the shares were not sold at a discount to market prices. The board also highlighted that the two million shares represented less than 4% of both Hall's and Hupert's stockholdings in the company. The co-founders remain the two largest shareholders, owning more than 24 million shares each. There are a total of 104.5 million Pro Medicus shares outstanding. According to the board, Hupert and Hall "are actively engaged in the company as executives and board members and are committed to its future. They remain the two key stake holders in the company with their combined holding post this recent sale of 46%." Both co-founders said they have no plans to sell any additional Pro Medicus shares in the foreseeable future. Commenting on the sale, Pro Medicus chairman Peter Kempen said: This sale of shares by the founders is part of a progressive sell down, which provides prospective shareholders with the opportunity to invest in the company and ultimately will increase the free float. Every investor needs to decide what's right or their own personal situation. Broadly speaking, Pro Medicus shares have been storming higher on the back of strong, ongoing growth. At its profit soared 36.5% to $82.8 million. Hupert also sounded a positive note on the company's outlook at the time, saying, "We have a bit over 7% of the total addressable market (TAM) in the US and growing, so there is still a huge amount of runway ahead of us." Indeed, Bell Potter Pro Medicus shares can still move higher from here (courtesy of ). The broker just upped its price target for Pro Medicus shares by 100% to $260.00.Kane hat trick against Augsburg hides Bayern's concerning lack of goals

Toll Brothers Announces Cash DividendBy MARY CLARE JALONICK and MATT BROWN WASHINGTON (AP) — Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Defense Department, said he had a “wonderful conversation” with Maine Sen. Susan Collins on Wednesday as he pushed to win enough votes for confirmation. He said he will not back down after allegations of excessive drinking and sexual misconduct. Here’s how China plans to fight back National Politics | Trump won’t be able to save the struggling US beef industry Collins said after the hourlong meeting that she questioned Hegseth about the allegations amid reports of drinking and the revelation that he made a settlement payment after being accused of a sexual assault that he denies. She said she had a “good, substantive” discussion with Hegseth and “covered a wide range of topics,” including sexual assault in the military, Ukraine and NATO. But she said she would wait until a hearing, and notably a background check, to make a decision. “I asked virtually every question under the sun,” Collins told reporters as she left her office after the meeting. “I pressed him both on his position on military issues as well as the allegations against him, so I don’t think there was anything that we did not cover.” The meeting with Collins was closely watched as she is seen as more likely than most of her Republican Senate colleagues to vote against some of Trump’s Cabinet picks. She and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a fellow moderate Republican, did not shy from opposing Trump in his first term when they wanted to do so and sometimes supported President Joe Biden’s nominees for the judicial and executive branches. And Hegseth, an infantry combat veteran and former “Fox & Friends” weekend host, is working to gain as many votes as he can as some senators have expressed concerns about his personal history and lack of management experience. “I’m certainly not going to assume anything about where the senator stands,” Hegseth said as he left Collins’ office. “This is a process that we respect and appreciate. And we hope, in time, overall, when we get through that committee and to the floor that we can earn her support.” Hegseth met with Murkowski on Tuesday. He has also been meeting repeatedly with Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, a military veteran who has said she is a survivor of sexual assault and has spent time in the Senate working on improving how attacks are reported and prosecuted within the ranks. On Monday, Ernst said after a meeting with him that he had committed to selecting a senior official to prioritize those goals. Republicans will have a 53-49 majority next year, meaning Trump cannot lose more than three votes on any of his nominees. It is so far unclear whether Hegseth will have enough support, but Trump has stepped up his pressure on senators in the last week. “Pete is a WINNER, and there is nothing that can be done to change that!!!” Trump posted on his social media platform last week.GSA Capital Partners LLP bought a new position in shares of Bloom Energy Co. The NFL has faced ongoing controversy for years regarding the potential link between chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and football-related injuries, with no resolution in sight. More News: Blood Test Can Benefit NFL Concussion Return-to-Play Decisions Although the league settled a lawsuit filed by over 4,500 former players who claimed the NFL downplayed the risks of brain trauma, the family of Ed Lothamer, a former defensive tackle who played eight seasons for the Kansas City Chiefs, argues that the league treats players with CTE as "throwaways" and is "just waiting for everyone to die." In a sobering new profile with The Kansas City Star , Ryan Lothamer-Welch, daughter of the deceased Chiefs player, went into detail regarding feeling "shunned" by the NFL due to her father's struggle with CTE. Despite the settled lawsuit, Lothamer-Welch feels that the NFL is doing little for players diagnosed with CTE. "I felt like they treated a lot of the guys that built that league on their backs like they were throwaways ..." Lothamer-Welch said. "It's just human nature. I mean, people care about what's happening today. They're not so interested in what happened yesterday or what's going to happen 10 years down the road." It is worth noting for context that the $765 million settlement by the NFL , which was intended to help cover treatment for players with CTE, dementia, or other brain-related illnesses after suffering on-field concussions, has been heavily criticized and accused of "routinely [failing] to deliver money and medical care to former players suffering from dementia and CTE." According to an investigation by The Washington Post , the NFL has allegedly failed to follow through on its responsibility to provide payouts, exploiting medical loopholes to avoid covering these expenses. After reviewing 15,000 pages of documents from more than 100 former players, the Post said players regularly saw "their claims denied by the administrative law firm that oversees the settlement. Reportedly, medical personnel who worked for the NFL "simply overruled physicians who actually evaluated players" and would reclassify dementia symptoms on non-football-related causes. Over a dozen players "failed to qualify for settlement money or medical care and then died, only to have CTE confirmed via autopsy." A recent survey by JAMA Neurology found that one-third of former professional football players suspect they suffer from CTE); the study is one of the most extensive to explore former NFL players' perceptions of their cognitive health. Ed Lothamer passed away in 2022, at the age of 80. Following his death, his family donated his brain to the UNITE Brain Bank, where researchers confirmed a diagnosis of stage 4 CTE, the most severe form of the condition. He had been drafted by the Chiefs in 1964 and was part of a defense renowned for its future Pro Football Hall of Famers. Despite numerous injuries, he played in 88 games and started 35 as the Chiefs appeared in two of the first four Super Bowls. "We were told he had some type of "dementia," with some forward-thinking doctors alluding to possible CTE and he had gotten a number of opinions over the years about his volatile and diminishing condition..." Lothamer-Welch wrote in a personal story at the Concussion Legacy Foundation . "My father made $42,000 during his final season in the NFL , which we now realize was the price he exchanged for his brain." More News: Professional Athletes' Homes Are Being Targeted by Robbery Ring Although Lothamer was a plaintiff in the settlement and had been formally diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2016, his case is among many that the NFL has managed to sidestep, offering neither a payout nor any acknowledgment. To the Lothamer family, this appears to be part of a deliberate strategy by the league, even as they continue to hope that an attorney might help them secure compensation and, perhaps, some form of validation from the NFL . Instead, they've felt increasingly discouraged by the legal process. "They are just waiting for everybody to die," Elisabeth Lothamer, the widow of the former Chiefs player said. "I mean, it's just what they're doing." For more on the NFL , head to Newsweek Sports .

The Los Angeles Kings look to match their longest winning streak in over three years when they visit the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night in Newark, N.J. The Kings extended their run of good fortune to six games on Tuesday when they opened a seven-game road trip -- matching a season high -- with a 3-1 triumph over the New York Islanders. A victory on Thursday would allow Los Angeles to claim a seven-game run for the first time since Oct. 30-Nov. 11, 2021. Adrian Kempe converted a feed from captain Anze Kopitar to open the scoring for the second consecutive contest on Tuesday. Kempe has scored nine of his team-leading 14 goals over his last 11 games. Kopitar, who is riding a four-game point streak (one goal, four assists), boasts club-best totals in assists (24) and points (32). "We've played together enough to where he knows what I'm going to do and I've got a pretty good idea with where he's going to be and how he's going to react in certain situations," Kopitar said of Kempe. "So, yeah, I mean, the chemistry has been there and, hopefully, we can keep it going." The addition of Trevor Moore hasn't slowed the line one bit. Moore, in fact, has three goals and two assists over his last four games. "The last few games, (our line) has been going pretty good," Kopitar said. "It always takes a few games to get adjusted, with Trevor coming in on the line and Adrian (Kempe) and me making sure we know where he's going to be. Right now, it seems like the plays are clicking." The fast start was quite the sight for Kings head coach Jim Hiller, who admitted he wasn't sure what he'd see from his team as it started the lengthy road trip. "You know, you're not sure how you're going to come out. We flew all the way out here, all that kind of stuff, and (the first) was probably one of our best periods of the year," Hiller said. New Jersey won 13 of 18 games before dropping back-to-back contests at home this week. The Devils were shut out for the fifth time this season in a 4-0 setback to the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday. They dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night. Jesper Bratt boosted his team-leading totals in assists (25) and points (38) after setting up Ondrej Palat's goal in the first period. Bratt has 10 points (three goals, seven assists) over his past six games. New Jersey carried the majority of play and held a decisive 39-17 edge in shots in what turned out to be a deflating loss.
