The performance of ( ) over the past several years has been simply phenomenal. The Rolls-Royce share price, under 40p in 2020, has recently been close to £6. It has now fallen back slightly to trade at around £5.50. But I reckon it could get back up to and pass the £6 mark. In fact, I would not be surprised to see it go past £7 in 2025. Momentum and fundamentals A couple of different things affect share prices, depending on the situation. One of them is the fundamental, underlying performance of the business. I will discuss Rolls’ in just a moment. But can also be important. As investors (and perhaps speculators) who fear missing out, they keep piling into a hot share, pushing it upwards. That can last a long time but equally can suddenly go into reverse. Momentum largely ignores fundamentals on the way up – but the same can be true on the way down, too. Even a strong business can see its share price fall in the short to medium term if enough investors fall out of love with it (or simply opt to cash in their gains to spend on something else). I like the look of the business, if things go smoothly So, I think momentum alone could push the shares to £6. That may even be true up to £7, although that will be harder. But as a believer in , not a trader, my interest is not in momentum but rather in the fundamentals that ought to underpin the Rolls-Royce share price over the long run. At £6, the prospective price-to-earnings ratio would be nearly 22, and at £7, over 25. Those look high to me. However, that is based on the company’s current earnings. But imagine Rolls can double its earnings. That may sound ambitious. But at the half-year point, were 83% higher than in the same six months last year. Not only that, but Rolls is still only on the road to meeting its ambitious medium-term financial targets. If it manages to do that and earnings rise accordingly, I think £7 would be a reasonable valuation for the share. I’m not ready to board! Despite that – a 27% potential jump from the current Rolls-Royce share price – I will not be buying. Why not? The targets are ambitious and Rolls has a long history of mixed performance. Some of that is within the company’s control. But some key elements are not. For example, demand for civil aviation engine sales (and, to a lesser extent, servicing) can plummet when people stop flying en masse, for example because of terrorist fears or pandemic-related travel restrictions. I expect such demand shocks to happen again at some point. They lie outside the company’s control. Maybe its nuclear power and defence businesses will help absorb the shock, but civil aviation is core to the company. I do not think the current share price, let alone a higher one, offers me sufficient margin of safety to reflect that risk properly.Psst. Ubisoft just released a new game. The question of who uses which bathroom on Capitol Hill has become a heated topic ahead of the 119th U.S. Congress convening next year. This debate was sparked by the historic election of Sarah McBride , a transgender woman, to represent Delaware in Congress. In response, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) introduced a resolution aiming to require transgender individuals to use bathrooms corresponding to their sex assigned at birth. Democratic state Rep. Zooey Zephyr, the first transgender woman in Montana's state legislature, understands what it feels like to be singled out. She joined Scripps News on Friday to weigh in on the controversy unfolding in D.C. "It's important to acknowledge that while these attacks on transgender people are always brought one bill at a time, they do not focus on specific issues," Zephyr said. "The hate of trans people is boundless. We saw that when Nancy Mace went on far-right media earlier this week and claimed that it was 'offensive' that Congresswoman McBride views herself as an equal to Nancy Mace." "When we see policies targeting trans women just trying to live their lives in the restroom, trying to play sports with their friends — that is not where the hate stops from the right," Zephyr said. "That hate is on display at every moment, which is why it's important for us to resist these efforts to target our community." In 2023, Republican lawmakers in Montana voted to ban Zephyr from the House floor and from participating in debates after she spoke out against a bill banning gender-affirming care for minors. The incident led to legal challenges over Zephyr's censure and to political activism from supporters of transgender rights. "The attacks we see on trans people will escalate. This will not be the last attack on Congresswoman McBride," Zephyr said. "In my perspective, it is important that we make sure as trans people in this country that we do not cede ground to someone who wants to erase us — regardless of whether they want to erase us in the Capitol, or if they want to erase us as we go through our daily lives in public. We have to stand strong." In an interview with Scripps News this week, Mace said her resolution was specifically targeted at Rep.-elect McBride, who stated she will "follow the rules as outlined" even if she disagrees with them. "I'm not here to fight about bathrooms," McBride said . "I'm here to fight for Delawareans to bring down the costs facing families." Despite McBride's statement, Mace said her effort to ban transgender individuals from certain bathrooms extends beyond Washington. She is advocating for legislation requiring transgender people to use restrooms that align with their sex assigned at birth on any property receiving public funds. "I have PTSD from the sexual abuse I have suffered at the hands of a man. We have to as women draw a line in the sand, a big fat red line, about our rights," Mace said. "And the basic question today is, do women have rights or do we not? And I will tell you just the idea of a man in a locker room watching me change clothes after a workout is a huge trigger and it's not OK to make and force women to be vulnerable in private spaces." The sparring during question period in the legislature is largely driven by Opposition MLAs grilling government ministers, and with the B.C. Conservative party's rapid rise to Official Opposition, its MLAs will now get to set the tone. But even before his first legislative session begins, some of the heat is instead on Leader John Rustad for some of his choices appointing critics to their Opposition portfolios. Rustad is also on the defensive as the governing party reacts to the news that two of Rustad's MLAs will keep their seats on local councils, essentially doing two jobs. Anna Kindy, a Campbell River-based physician and addictions specialist, has been tapped to be the party's health critic. Rustad has also created a new portfolio called parental rights and sports, to be led by Mandeep Dhaliwal. The parental rights movement has opposed sexual orientation and gender identity policies, or SOGI, in schools. Rustad says he would have preferred that the MLAs resign from their local roles. "If they do want to stay on local government, ultimately it's their decision to do that." Rustad says he's recommended that the two MLAs donate the salaries from their local government positions. Watson has been limited to just 19 games in three seasons because of an NFL suspension and injuries with the Browns, who signed him to a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract in 2022. The restructuring allows the team to spread out the salary-cap hit after the 2026 season, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team does not disclose contract specifics. The 29-year-old Watson has two years remaining on his contract with an average of $46 million a year, and with a salary-cap hit of $72.9 million in those seasons. The agreement to restructure his deal will not preclude the Browns from adding talent at the quarterback position in 2025, the person said. Watson played in only seven games this season before suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon. He’s 9-10 as a starter with Cleveland. The Browns (3-12) have been a major disappointment after making it to the playoffs a year ago behind Joe Flacco, who was signed as a free agent after Watson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.
