Sir Keir Starmer was facing a diplomatic rift with the US and Israel after ministers refused to say if Binyamin Netanyahu could travel to Britain without being arrested for war crimes. President Biden called the International Criminal Court’s decision to issue arrest warrants against the Israeli prime minister and Yoav Gallant, the former defence minister, “outrageous”. Netanyahu said the charges were the work of “biased judges motivated by antisemitic sentiment against the Jewish state”. But Downing Street suggested that the UK would have to comply with any request by the ICC to arrest Netanyahu if he visited the UK. The prime minister’s official spokesman said the government would not comment on “hypotheticals” but said the UK would follow its “legal obligations”. Under UK legislation, if

The way that freshman guard Brooke Carlson has started her college basketball career at Colorado State could have been hard to predict by some people. If Carlson were just an average player, perhaps that would be the case. The way that Batavia coach Kevin Jensen knows Carlson, however, her initial success is no shock at all. “I can’t say that any of us are surprised,” Jensen said. “Athletically, she’s so gifted. We were a nice piece to the puzzle with how she developed, but so many times behind the scenes, she was putting in hours and hours of work that very few knew about. It’s paying off now.” Especially since Carlson has emerged as Colorado State’s top option off the bench. Carlson, Batavia’s all-time leading scorer, is averaging 6.2 points in her first taste of college action. She also has 25 assists, 14 steals and 12 rebounds for the Rams (9-4). “It’s been 100% better than what I felt like I was coming into,” Carlson said. “It’s been a lot, but it’s been fun. I was kind of expecting to figure my way out, but I found what I can do already.” The highlight game for Carlson came Dec. 8 against Gonzaga. She scored 18 points in 27 minutes, both career highs. While those statistics are striking, what stands out most is what Carlson accomplished countless times at Batavia. When the game is in the balance, Carlson finds a way to take over. Batavia’s Brooke Carlson (2) drives past Wheaton Warrenville South’s Emily Troia during the Class 4A Bartlett Regional championship game on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024. (Jon Langham / The Beacon-News) She hit a layup with 33 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give Colorado State a 66-65 lead against Gonzaga, which eventually forced a tie and sent the game into overtime. With only 2 seconds left in OT, another layup by Carlson gave the Rams a dramatic 74-72 win. “The bigger the stage, the better she’s going to look,” Jensen said. “That’s holding true still.” Colorado State coach Ryun Williams fell in love with Carlson’s game during the recruiting process, but translating that skill to the next level can often be tricky. Carlson, however, has made quick strides with the Rams. Mike Mantucca / The Beacon-News Batavia’s Brooke Carlson (2) goes up for a layup against Geneva’s Leah Palmer (22) during the Class 4A Glenbard West Sectional final in Glen Ellyn on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023. (Mike Mantucca / The Beacon-News) “First of all, just an elite competitor,” Williams said. “Her motor really stood out. She’s a fearless player. That really stood out to me and the staff. Obviously, she’s very skilled. She can put pressure on the rim and can shoot it. “We surely hoped we could get her on the floor early in her career. She’s the one that got herself to that floor. We expect that to keep growing. She’s just different than anyone else on our team. I think she’s a kid that can lead us.” Carlson knew that the level of play would jump up significantly in college. Those hours that Jensen talked about behind the scenes helped her build to that level. She’ll experience another level of play Sunday when Colorado State begins Mountain West Conference play at Utah State. “It’s definitely a lot more pressure and more intense, I would say,” Carlson said. “At the end of the day, it’s just basketball, so you have to figure out how to make it like it’s always been.” Jon Langham/The Beacon-News Batavia’s Brooke Carlson (2) scoops in a layup after splitting the defense of Geneva’s Kinsey Gracie (24) and Leah Palmer during a DuKane Conference game in Batavia on Friday, Jan. 26, 2024. (Jon Langham / The Beacon-News) Williams also has seen all the traits he observed about Carlson in high school manifest quickly. “She’s got that little swag,” Williams said. “She’s a confident young lady. She believes in her ability, and fearless is the word. She’s had a great first semester for us, and she’s been rewarded for it. “I’m sure there’s more of that to come, but we’re just trying to get her to be really consistent and solid every single day. She’s buying into how she needs to really impact our team.” Carlson has a simple plan for the rest of the season. “I just feel like finding myself, being 100% comfortable in what I’m doing and winning are the goals,” Carlson said. “It’s a lot of hard work, that’s for sure.” Paul Johnson is a freelance reporter for The Beacon-News.By Ross Cristantiello Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson returned to work Monday, three days after she was arrested on public corruption charges by federal authorities. The embattled councilor led a hearing on how to redress historic racial harms , ignoring calls for her resignation . At the same time, potential challengers for Fernandes Anderson’s seat are ramping up their campaigns. Fernandes Anderson appeared virtually in her role as chair of the Committee on Civil Rights, Racial Equity, and Immigrant Advancement. Councilors Erin Murphy and Ed Flynn, who both urged Fernandes Anderson to resign after she was arrested, participated in the hearing. There was no mention of Fernandes Anderson’s arrest or the charges against her during the meeting. Murphy thanked her for “gathering” the attendees and advocating for her district. Fernandes Anderson represents District 7, which includes Roxbury, Dorchester, Fenway, and part of the South End. Prosecutors say she orchestrated a kickback scheme involving a family member who was also hired as a staffer within her office. Fernandes Anderson did not disclose that this staffer was a family member, but issued them a $13,000 bonus with the agreement that $7,000 would be secretly handed back to the councilor, who was struggling financially in early 2023. The handoff of that cash payment occurred in a City Hall bathroom last year, according to federal authorities. She briefly appeared in federal court Friday, entering a not guilty plea before being released on conditions that include regular reporting to probation officials, staying in Massachusetts, surrendering her passport, and staying away from any witnesses. News broke early last week that Fernandes Anderson was being investigated by federal law enforcement, but the specifics were not made public until Friday. She appeared at a City Council hearing last week before being arrested, telling reporters that she had no plans to resign . Over the weekend, Fernandes Anderson continued to post on social media about regular council business. She has limited which Facebook users can comment on these posts. Mayor Michelle Wu, Council President Ruthzee Louijeune, Councilor Sharon Durkan, and Councilor Gabriela Coletta Zapata have all called for Fernandes Anderson’s resignation, alongside Murphy and Flynn. The full City Council is scheduled to meet in person on Wednesday. Fernandes Anderson was initially elected in 2021, and won reelection last year. She is up for reelection again next year, and already appears to have a few challengers. Said Ahmed , a track coach who cofounded the Boston United Track and Cross Country Club, a free youth track program, announced his intent to run for City Council on Dec. 4. Ahmed, who also ran track professionally and worked within Boston Public Schools, wrote about his desire to take “bold action” in a series of social media posts. “I’ve dedicated my life to empowering Boston’s youth. My work in education and athletics has always been about creating opportunities, and I believe we can transform our schools and neighborhoods to support every student and family,” he wrote. Ahmed filed paperwork with the state in October about running for City Council, but did not begin publicizing his campaign until last week. This delay was to solidify his platform and perfect his website and was unrelated to the scandal involving Fernandes Anderson, Ahmed told the Boston Herald . The other candidate is Said Abdikarim, The Dorchester Reporter reported in October. Abdikarim volunteered to work on the campaigns of former District 7 Councilor Tito Jackson, Mayor Wu, the late Mayor Tom Menino, and Rep. Ayanna Pressley. Abdikarim has worked at the at the nonprofit African Community Economic Development of New England, and the Islamic Society of Boston, per the Reporter . He ran for an at-large City Council seat in 2021. TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Snoop Dogg has nearly as many ties to football as he does to rap music. The entertainer coached youth football for years and created the Snoop League, an after-school program for inner city Los Angeles youths. Snoop has been a guest analyst on football broadcasts and his son, Cordell Broadus, played Division I football. When Snoop took his latest step, becoming the sponsor of a bowl game, he had a demand: Find a way for all players in the game to receive name, image and likeness (NIL) money. “This was Snoop's idea,” said Kym Adair, executive director of the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl presented by Gin & Juice. “He was having conversations with people he knows in the college football world and I got a call that said he wants us to be the first bowl to make this commitment and that's what we did.” The beneficiaries are Colorado State and Miami (Ohio), who will conclude their seasons Saturday at Arizona Stadium in the Arizona Bowl. The bowl is classified as a 501(c)(3), so all revenue goes to charity. And, being one of the few bowls not tied to ESPN, it opens the door for unique sponsorship opportunities. The bowl was previously sponsored by Barstool Sports and the digital media company used its own cast of characters on the broadcast, which was streamed on its digital platforms. Snoop Dogg takes over this year. The rapper/entertainer is the latest celebrity to sponsor a bowl, following the footsteps of Jimmy Kimmel and Rob Gronkowski at the LA Bowl. And, Snoop being Snoop, he wanted to put his own spin on his own bowl. “College football fans are exhausted by the constant talk around NIL, conference realignment, coach movement, transfer portal and super conferences,” Snoop said in a video posted on social media. “So it’s time that we get back to the roots of college football — when it was focused on the colleges, the players and the competition, the community, the fan experience and the pageantry.” With that will be an NIL component. The bowl can't pay players just for playing in the bowl, but both teams participated in football clinics on Friday and will get paid for their services. Other bowls have given single players NIL opportunities, but this is believed to be the first to offer it to every player on both teams. “I love the fact that the Arizona Bowl is unique and tries new things, and obviously having Snoop here is unique,” Colorado State coach Jay Norvell said. “The NIL component, it’s the future. It’s what football has become now. We think it’s fantastic for our kids and then the interaction with the kids is the hidden gem of the whole thing.” The NIL component of the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl comes a month after a similar effort in The Players Era Festival basketball tournament in Las Vegas. The eight-team tournament said it paid out $9 million in NIL money to participating players for activities outside the competition. It also offered $50 million in NIL opportunities over the next three years for services and activities compliant with NCAA regulations. Are the Players Era Festival and Arizona Bowl the start of a new future? It is not out of the question in big-time college athletics, where schools are already preparing for the era of revenue sharing with players next year. “Revenue sharing between the players and the athletic departments is already on the horizon, so whether that takes the place of these types of arrangements or they're completely separate has yet to be determined," Adair said. "We're just trying to be flexible, ahead of the curve and make an impact any way we can.” Just the way Snoop wants it. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Kirill Kaprizov gives the Minnesota Wild long-absent offensive star powerBy Conor Ryan Amid a disappointing 3-10 season thus far for the Patriots, could Robert Kraft and New England’s ownership group opt to fire Jerod Mayo after just one season as head coach? Count Patriots legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Ty Law among those who think Mayo’s job is secure beyond the 2024 season. Speaking on WEEI Tuesday, Law stressed that Kraft won’t decide to cut ties with his new head coach immediately — given that expectations were likely already tempered going into the 2024 campaign. “When I think Mr. Kraft went in, of course he wanted better. The expectations were more than what we got,” Law said on “The Greg Hill Show”. “But I think that he didn’t have expectations as far as, like, we’re gonna go to the playoffs or be a Super Bowl contender when he made the hire. You’ve got to give him a chance. ... I think Mr. Kraft is a smart enough businessman to give him time. How much time? I don’t know, but he’s definitely secure for next season.” For Law, Mayo’s tenuous situation with the Patriots should be cast in a similar light as a first-round quarterback undergoing growing pains in his first year in the NFL ranks. Even though New England’s defense, discipline, and late-game execution have regressed this season under Mayo, Law believes that the Patriots also need to add more talent around a core short on franchise talents beyond Drake Maye and Christian Gonzalez. “I think the first year — it isn’t a great indication of what he could possibly do until he gets his own guys in there,” Law said. “He has to open up, he gotta back up the Brinks truck, dammit. [Kraft] gotta spend some money. “So, is he gonna give him something to work with? So I don’t think Jerod is going anywhere, because that wouldn’t be — give somebody one year and don’t let him get his, I mean this is his first year as a head coach. That’s just like if a rookie quarterback doesn’t have a great rookie season, do you get rid of him, or you give him time?” Law’s comments fall somewhat in line with NFL insider Albert Breer’s sentiment shared on NBC Sports Boston’s Sports Sunday earlier this week. But while Law believes that Kraft is preaching patience by sticking with Mayo, Breer believes that the optics of Kraft moving on from Mayo — who he said he picked as Bill Belichick’s successor “five years ago” — would be damaging. “I also think there’s this element of it, and I think this applies to Jerod Mayo too: Sometimes it’s hard for owners to admit they were wrong,” Breer said. “The owners here invested a lot in Jerod Mayo. They invested in him as a player, they invested in him as an assistant coach, they basically kicked the greatest coach of all time out the door to hand the job to Jerod Mayo. “I saw this in Dallas with Jerry Jones: One one of the reasons he was so reluctant to let go of Jason Garrett is because he viewed Jason Garrett as his creation. I think a similar dynamic exists here. I don’t think Kraft wants to be wrong about Jerod Mayo. For that matter, I don’t think they want to be wrong about Eliot Wolf, either.” Conor Ryan Conor Ryan is a staff writer covering the Bruins, Celtics, Patriots, and Red Sox for Boston.com, a role he has held since 2023. Tuberville said he didn't talk with Hegseth about his "personal" life on Monday, but later clarified that they indeed spoke on the phone about the misconduct allegations against Hegseth. "I'm gonna leave the personal stuff between y'all and him whenever he has an opportunity to sit down with you and explain, you know, the allegations that you're all pushing out," Tuberville told reporters. MORE: New details of Hegseth sexual assault claim documented in police report In 2017, Hegseth paid a settlement agreement to a woman who accused him of sexual assault, Tim Parlatore, an attorney for Hegseth, previously confirmed. Parlatore claimed Hegseth was the victim of "blackmail" and "false claims of sexual assault," and said he paid the settlement only because he feared his career would suffer if her allegations were made public. According to a 22-page police report obtained by ABC News, Hegseth's accuser told police that he took her phone and blocked her from leaving his hotel room on the night of the incident. On Sunday, the New Yorker published an investigation into Hegseth that alleged that "a trail of documents, corroborated by the accounts of former colleagues, indicates that Hegseth was forced to step down by both of the two nonprofit advocacy groups that he ran -- Veterans for Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America -- in the face of serious allegations of financial mismanagement, sexual impropriety, and personal misconduct." The New York Times published an email Friday that Hegseth's mother, Penelope Hegseth, sent him in 2018, saying he had routinely mistreated women for years. Penelope Hegseth confirmed the contents of the email to the New York Times in a phone interview, but said in the interview to the Times that she regretted her original sentiments expressed in the email and sent her son an immediate follow-up email expressing regret for what she had said. ABC News has not independently confirmed the New Yorker or New York Times' reporting. MORE: Hegseth says he's 'completely cleared' in sex assault case. The police report doesn't say that. Speaking to reporters after their meeting, Tuberville praised Hegseth and sidestepped questions about his alleged pattern of misconduct. "I've known him for a while. Pete's the type of guy that he's going to work. He's got a great work ethic. He's very, very smart. He understands the business side as well as the military side." Tuberville said. "He's actually fought in wars. He is a good age too. Somebody that can relate to the young men and women that we need to recruit in the military." Asked if any of the allegations in the New Yorker article concerned him, Tuberville left the explanation up to Hegseth. MORE: Trump defense secretary pick Pete Hegseth was flagged as potential military 'insider threat' because of 'Deus Vult' tattoo "Well, I'm gonna leave that to his explanation of all that. I can't comment on that," he said. "Obviously, if it's to a certain degree, people are not going to vote to confirm it, but what I know when I talk to him about what I've read, what I've studied and been around him, I'll vote for him." As Tuberville took question after question on Hegseth's allegations, he was asked if Hegseth needed to defend himself forcefully and provide an explanation to the American people. "That's up to him," Tuberville said. "Eventually he's gonna have to come out and start visiting with the media. I think, right now, his number one objective is to go out and and sell himself to you know, at least 51 or 52 Senators. That's the job he needs to do to get confirmed." Tuberville mentioned a dozen of senators are meeting with Hegseth as a group Monday night, but he did not elaborate further.

PANDERING to the International Criminal Court risks a rift between Britain and Donald Trump, Sir Keir Starmer was warned yesterday. It came as Downing Street signalled that the PM would comply with an ICC warrant to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu if he travelled to the UK. A No10 spokesman said: “The UK will always comply with its legal obligations as set out by domestic law and indeed international law.” It saw Downing Street insisting that Israel remains an important “ally” - while refusing to rule out putting its PM in handcuffs . Senior Trump allies reacted with fury to the ICC judgment, following President Biden branding it “outrageous”. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham yesterday threatened to introduce a Bill punishing states that follow ICC diktats. Read More on Politics The Senator said: “I will be introducing legislation that puts other countries on notice – If you aid and abet the ICC after their action against the State of Israel, you can expect consequences from the United States. “Any nation that joins with the ICC after this outrage is a partner in a reckless act that tramples the rule of law.” Incoming Senate Republican Leader John Thune pledged to bring a Bill to Capitol Hill sanctioning the ICC. He said: “The ICC’s arrest warrant against Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Gallant is outrageous, unlawful, and dangerous.” Most read in The Sun Sir Keir’s spokesman said work had been done to build bridges with Trump’s team amid fears of a fresh row with the US, which is not an ICC member. Under the ICC Act, if Netanyahu steps foot in Britain, a Cabinet Minister - most likely Foreign Secretary David Lammy - must seek the warrant from a domestic court. On Friday an onslaught of foreign leaders blasted the ruling by the foreign “kangaroo” court. Austrian Prime Minister Alexander Schallenberg said: “The ICC decision is utterly incomprehensible. “This decision is a disservice to the Court‘s credibility.” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said: “The ICC arrest warrant against Prime Minister Netanyahu is brazen, cynical and completely unacceptable. “I invited Prime Minister Netanyahu for an official visit to Hungary, where we will guarantee his freedom and safety.” Both the outgoing-Joe Biden and incoming-Donald Trump administrations slammed the ruling, with some Republican senators even vowing repercussions for any state that complies with it. Reform Deputy Leader Richard Tice said: “The ICC has disgraced itself with clear bias and Starmer has shown he is kowtowing to global institutions to the detriment of our key international relationships.” Yesterday, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper refused to say whether she would greenlight Mr Netanyahu being locked up in Britain. She told Sky News: “That’s not a matter for me as Home Secretary. “The International Criminal Court is of course independent and we respect its independence and the role that it has.” Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick said: “Labour’s position is absurd. “By accepting the decision of this Kangaroo Court, Starmer and Lammy risk weakening our relationship with our most important ally again. Biden administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies , as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, told reporters Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. The update from Neuberger is the latest development in a massive hacking operation that has alarmed national security officials, exposed cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the private sector and laid bare China's hacking sophistication. The hackers compromised the networks of telecommunications companies to obtain customer call records and gain access to the private communications of “a limited number of individuals." Though the FBI has not publicly identified any of the victims, officials believe senior U.S. government officials and prominent political figures are among those whose whose communications were accessed. Neuberger said officials did not yet have a precise sense how many Americans overall were affected by Salt Typhoon, in part because the Chinese were careful about their techniques, but a “large number" were in the Washington-Virginia area. Officials believe the goal of the hackers was to identify who owned the phones and, if they were “government targets of interest,” spy on their texts and phone calls, she said. The FBI said most of the people targeted by the hackers are "primarily involved in government or political activity.” Neuberger said the episode highlighted the need for required cybersecurity practices in the telecommunications industry, something the Federal Communications Commission is to take up at a meeting next month. “We know that voluntary cyber security practices are inadequate to protect against China, Russia and Iran hacking of our critical infrastructure,” she said. The Chinese government has denied responsibility for the hacking.A Canadian criminologist who once worked on inland immigration enforcement for the Canada Border Services Agency said Canada needs to better track foreign nationals who arrive in the country on student visas. Kelly Sundberg, a professor at Mount Royal University, said he was not shocked to hear that Indian law enforcement agencies are investigating links between Canadian colleges and a scheme to ferry international students across the Canada-U. S. border. “I’m not surprised that our ridiculous honour-based immigration program is being gamed by transnational criminals. That doesn’t surprise me at all,” Sundberg said. India’s Enforcement Directorate said on Tuesday it had uncovered evidence of human trafficking after launching an investigation on the Indian connections the deaths of Jagdish and Vaishali Patel and their two children in January 2022. The Indian family was found dead from the cold near the Manitoba-Minnesota border and last month an American and an Indian man were convicted of bringing unauthorized people into the U.S. and profiting from it. The Indian agency says it has evidence that an Indian national allegedly arranged for people to get admissions to Canadian colleges in order to get a student visa for Canada, intending to then cross into the U.S. with no plan to actually study in Canada. The RCMP said in a statement that it is aware of the Indian statement and have reached out through the country’s international police liaison to get more information on the investigation. The RCMP said it would have no further comment. The federal government deferred comment to the RCMP. The allegations have not been proven in court and India has not identified the Canadian colleges allegedly involved. Colleges and Institutes Canada said they do not have information on the nature of colleges linked to these allegations, and are committed to helping ensure student safety and the integrity of the immigration system. Sundberg said having a means to track when and how temporary residents, including international students, leave the country would reduce vulnerabilities in the system. “When I was an immigration officer, I saw this playing out 17, 20 years ago. So it hasn’t changed,” Sundberg said. “What it takes is the government has to enforce the laws it has. It needs to start collecting the bio data, so the photos and the fingerprints of every non-citizen crossing our border and have a process to confirm their departure. We need to tie documents with the biometrics.” Sundberg said he'd be “very surprised” if reputable post-secondary institutions were part of these allegations. Instead, he suspects colleges set up in strip malls. These types of schools have been a focus in Canada’s student visa reforms, with Immigration Minister Marc Miller calling them the diploma equivalent of puppy mills. These latest allegations land as Canada is making major changes to its immigration system, including significant cutbacks on the number of student visas it issues. At an immigration committee meeting last month, the Conservatives asked how Canada tracks international students if they leave the country. At that committee hearing, Miller said the vast majority of people on temporary visas, including students, leave once their visa expires. He said there is work to do to curb asylum claims from international students. The problem of people crossing into the U.S. illegally has also become a thorn in the Canada-U.S. relationship ahead of the return of Donald Trump as president next month. Trump has threatened steep tariffs on all Canadian goods if Canada doesn’t do more to end illegal border crossings and the flow of illegal drugs into the United States.
