Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save BEIRUT — Israel's military launched airstrikes across Lebanon on Monday, unleashing explosions throughout the country and killing at least 31 while Israeli leaders appeared to be closing in on a negotiated ceasefire with the Hezbollah militant group. Israeli strikes hit commercial and residential buildings in Beirut as well as in the port city of Tyre. Military officials said they targeted areas known as Hezbollah strongholds. They issued evacuation orders for Beirut's southern suburbs, and strikes landed across the city, including meters from a Lebanese police base and the city's largest public park. The barrage came as officials indicated they were nearing agreement on a ceasefire, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 's Security Cabinet prepared to discuss an offer on the table. For the first time, the G7 ministers were joined by their counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, as well as the Secretary General of the Arab League. Thick smoke, flames and debris erupt Monday from an Israeli airstrike that targeted a building in Tayouneh, Beirut, Lebanon. Meanwhile, massive explosions lit up Lebanon's skies with flashes of orange, sending towering plumes of smoke into the air as Israeli airstrikes pounded Beirut's southern suburbs Monday. The blasts damaged buildings and left shattered glass and debris scattered across nearby streets. Some of the strikes landed close to central Beirut and near Christian neighborhoods and other targets where Israel issued evacuation warnings, including in Tyre and Nabatiyeh province. Israeli airstrikes also hit the northeast Baalbek-Hermel region without warning. Lebanon's Health Ministry said Monday that 26 people were killed in southern Lebanon, four in the eastern Baalbek-Hermel province and one in Choueifat, a neighborhood in Beirut's southern suburbs that was not subjected to evacuation warnings on Monday. The deaths brought the total toll to 3,768 killed in Lebanon throughout 13 months of war between Israel and Hezbollah and nearly two months since Israel launched its ground invasion. Many of those killed since the start of the war between Israel and Hezbollah have been civilians, and health officials said some of the recovered bodies were so severely damaged that DNA testing would be required to confirm their identities. Israel claims to have killed more than 2,000 Hezbollah members. Lebanon's Health Ministry says the war has displaced 1.2 million people. Destroyed buildings stand Monday in the area of a village in southern Lebanon as seen from northern Israel. Israeli ground forces invaded southern Lebanon in early October, meeting heavy resistance in a narrow strip of land along the border. The military previously exchanged attacks across the border with Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group that began firing rockets into Israel the day after the war in Gaza began last year. Lebanese politicians have decried the ongoing airstrikes and said they are impeding ceasefire negotiations. The country's deputy parliament speaker accused Israel of ramping up its bombardment to pressure Lebanon to make concessions in indirect ceasefire negotiations with Hezbollah. Elias Bousaab, an ally of the militant group, said Monday that the pressure has increased because "we are close to the hour that is decisive regarding reaching a ceasefire." Israeli officials voiced similar optimism Monday about prospects for a ceasefire. Mike Herzog, the country's ambassador to Washington, earlier in the day told Israeli Army Radio that several points had yet to be finalized. Though any deal would require agreement from the government, Herzog said Israel and Hezbollah were "close to a deal." "It can happen within days," he said. Israeli officials have said the sides are close to an agreement that would include withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and a pullback of Hezbollah fighters from the Israeli border. But several sticking points remain. A member of the Israeli security forces inspects an impact site Sunday after a rocket fired from Lebanon hit an area in Rinatya, outskirts of Tel Aviv, Israel. After previous hopes for a ceasefire were dashed, U.S. officials cautioned that negotiations were not yet complete and noted that there could be last-minute hitches that either delay or destroy an agreement. "Nothing is done until everything is done," White House national security spokesman John Kirby said Monday. The proposal under discussion to end the fighting calls for an initial two-month ceasefire during which Israeli forces would withdraw from Lebanon and Hezbollah would end its armed presence along the southern border south of the Litani River. The withdrawals would be accompanied by an influx of thousands more Lebanese army troops, who have been largely sidelined in the war, to patrol the border area along with an existing U.N. peacekeeping force. Western diplomats and Israeli officials said Israel demands the right to strike in Lebanon if it believes Hezbollah is violating the terms. The Lebanese government says such an arrangement would authorize violations of the country's sovereignty. Shoppers say they want eco-friendly products, so why aren't they buying them? Shoppers say they want eco-friendly products, so why aren't they buying them? On paper, being more sustainable and eco-friendly while shopping sounds great—so why don't more people do it? There is growing consumer consciousness about the environmental impact of where people choose to shop and the sustainability of the products they buy. According to McKinsey, over 60% of individuals surveyed in 2020 said they would be willing to pay more for a product that is packaged in an eco-friendly way. Since 2019, products marketed as being environmentally sustainable have seen a 28% growth in revenue compared to 20% for products with no such marketing, a 2023 McKinsey and NielsenIQ report found. Much of this is thanks to the preferences and attitudes of Gen Z, who, on average, care more than their older counterparts about being informed shoppers. The younger generation also has more social justice and environmental awareness altogether. Shoppers are willing to spend around 9.7% more on a product they know is sourced or manufactured sustainably, with 46% saying they would do so explicitly because they want to reduce their environmental footprint, according to a 2024 PwC report. Sustainable practices consumers look for from companies include production methods, packaging, and water conservation. But despite the growing consciousness around being more environmentally responsible, consumer actions don't always align with their values. In psychology, this is defined as the "say-do gap": the phenomenon wherein people openly express concern and intention around an issue, but fail to take tangible action to make a change. According to the Harvard Business Review in 2019, most consumers (65%) say they want to buy from brands that promote sustainability, but only 1 in 4 follow through. So why don't people actually shop sustainably, despite how much they express a preference for eco-friendly products—and how can we close the gap? The RealReal examined reports from the Harvard Business Review and other sources to explore why some shoppers want to buy sustainably but struggle to follow through. This lack of action isn't due to a lack of caring—in many cases, it's hard to know how to be a sustainable consumer and other factors are often outside of shoppers' control. But the more people shop sustainably, the easier and more accessible that market will be for everyone—making it much easier for folks to buy aligned with their values. Barriers to sustainable shopping There are many obstacles preventing shoppers from upholding eco-friendly habits as much as they may want to—but not all of these barriers are necessarily real, or accurately understood. Shopping sustainably simply isn't convenient or accessible for many. Those who live in apartment buildings are 50% less likely to recycle , according to Ipsos. Reasons for this can vary from lack of space to buildings being excluded altogether because of recycling contamination issues. Many believe that sustainable products are too expensive or of a lower quality. The former is often true, which does create a hurdle for many: The manufacturing processes and materials for sustainable products are pricey. For instance, organic cotton requires an intensive production process free of certain chemicals or pesticides; by definition, true eco-friendly products can't be mass-produced, further upping their price tag. Using recycled materials for packaging, or obtaining an eco certification, can also be expensive. However, although the narrative of eco-friendly products being more expensive is true, there is often more of an effort to use better quality materials that last longer than their noneco-friendly counterparts. This could end up saving consumers money in the long run: By paying more upfront, they can get more wear out of sustainable fashion, for instance. There is also undeniable political rhetoric surrounding eco-friendly products—however, despite many Conservative politicians decrying sustainable products, members of all generations are increasingly choosing to prioritize shopping sustainably regardless of their political affiliation, according to research from NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business . This finding shows a trend toward seeing sustainability as a nonpartisan subject everyone can benefit from, no matter where they lie on the political spectrum. Some might think eco-friendly clothing, in particular, is not fashion-forward; after all, many of the top clothing retailers in the world partake in fast fashion. However, brands are increasingly being recognized as 'cool' and 'trendy' for supporting environmentally ethical practices, particularly as younger generations prioritize sustainability, as noted before. Many increasingly popular online stores are taking advantage of this paradigm shift by offering secondhand shopping options that are not only fashionable, but also more affordable, like ThredUp or Poshmark. Additionally, many legacy large-name brands are hopping on the sustainability movement and are gaining appreciation from loyal customers. Amazon's Climate Pledge Friendly program partners with third-party certification bodies to make it easier for shoppers to identify eco-friendly products as they browse the website. H&M's newly launched H&M Rewear program debuts a resale platform that allows the resale of all clothing brands—not just their own. Similarly, Patagonia's Worn Wear program allows shoppers to trade in and buy used gear and clothing. The federal government is also working to close this gap. The Environmental Protection Agency's Safer Choice program is attempting to make sustainable shopping easier for consumers and companies alike. It includes a directory of certified products, a list of safer chemicals to look out for on labels, a "Safer Choice" label that products can earn to denote they are eco-friendly, and resources for manufacturers looking to adopt more sustainable practices. Most of all, though, the biggest way shoppers can shift toward sustainable shopping is through their behaviors and attitudes amongst their peers and communities. Studies show that humans largely care what others think of their actions; the more shoppers make environmentally conscious shopping the norm, the more others will follow suit. From an economic perspective, the more consumers shop eco-friendly, the more affordable and accessible these products will become, too: Sustainable products are currently more expensive because they are not in high demand. Once demand rises, production rates and prices can lower, making these products more accessible for all. Story editing by Carren Jao. Additional editing by Kelly Glass. Hollywood Publicist Steph Jones has accused her former client, embattled filmmaker and actor , of breach of contract in a lawsuit filed against him in New York this week, just days after his on the set of the film. Baldoni, who directed and starred alongside Lively in the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel, signed a one-year contract at Jones’ PR firm, Jonesworks, at a rate of $25,000 per month. In August, just as It was released theatrically, Baldoni dropped Jones’ firm and followed his publicist at Jonesworks, Jennifer Abel, to her newly launched PR firm. The lawsuit, filed in New York State Court, also names Abel and publicist Melissa Nathan as conspirators in a smear campaign against Lively and asserts that they then attempted to shift the blame for besmirching the actress around the release of to Jones. In Lively’s lawsuit, filed Saturday with the California Civil Rights Department, she states that Baldoni and his team engaged in a “social manipulation” campaign to “destroy” her reputation as revenge for claiming she was subjected to sexual harassment by Baldoni. Prior to Lively filing her suit over the weekend, her attorneys managed to obtain text messages from Jonesworks’ company phones by boldly sending a pre-litigation subpoena to Jones. The rep then handed over the phone used by Abel, which she “forensically preserved” after the publicist exited her company. Text messages from the device contain correspondences, which are laid out in Lively’s suit, in which the two reps and Baldoni discuss how they plan to “bury” Lively as the filmmaker sought to shut down a possible public outing of alleged on-set sexual misconduct. Baldoni has denied all claims in Lively’s complaint, slamming them as “shameful,” and “serious and categorically false accusations against Mr. Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios and its representatives.” In the latest suit in the spiraling drama around the movie, which happens to deal with issues around abuse and trauma, Jones’ suit claims Abel had planned for months to leave Jonesworks and abscond with the firm’s clients while also besmirching Jones’ professional reputation. Nathan stands accused in the lawsuit of encouraging Abel to leave as she was eager to gain Jonesworks’ clients. “This scheme ultimately inflicted serious damage on Jones and Jonesworks,” the suit claims. Calls placed by to Jonesworks seeking comment were not immediately returned. THR Newsletters Sign up for THR news straight to your inbox every day More from The Hollywood Reporter
India News | Political Parties in J-K Condole Manmohan Singh's Death, Hail His Humility and WisdomShe may have returned the USWNT to the top of the global football hierarchy by winning the Olympic gold medal, but Emma Hayes has a significant new task on her hands as the 2024 year comes to a close. The future of the goalkeeper position for the United States, a position of enormous strength over the decades, now faces uncertainty as 36-year-old legend Alyssa Naeher surprisingly announced her international retirement in late November. It came as a shock to USWNT fans as Naeher told the world she would hang up her international boots following upcoming friendlies against England and the Netherlands. Naeher's reveal was even more surprising given her NWSL club, the Chicago Red Stars, had just announced days prior that she would remain with the team for 2025 following a one-year extension of her contract. Now, as the calendar turns over and Emma Hayes looks towards the future, Naeher will add herself to the list of past USWNT greats like Hope Solo and Briana Scurry, while the team searches for the next great between the sticks. Alyssa Naeher stats, trophies won with USWNT At 36, Alyssa Naeher retires as a legend of the international game. She made her debut in 2014 and upon her retirement, has logged 113 international caps with the potential for two more against England and the Netherlands. Naeher is the only goalkeeper in women's soccer history to keep a clean sheet in both the Women's World Cup final and an Olympic gold medal match, winning the World Cup title in 2015 and 2019 and a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics, plus the bronze in 2020. On an individual level, Naeher won NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year in 2014 and CONCACAF Goalkeeper of the Year in 2018. Thus, the former Penn State standout is one of the most decorated goalkeepers in the global game. We’re gonna miss watching Alyssa Naeher making big saves in clutch moments for the USWNT 🥹🇺🇸 Congrats on retirement, Alyssa 🙌 pic.twitter.com/G7qQxWUiiu “Having the opportunity to be a part of the USWNT for the past 15 years has been the greatest honor,” said Naeher in the official press release. “When I began this journey, I never could have imagined where it would take me, and now I find myself so grateful for all the incredible teammates that I have shared the field with; teammates that have turned into lifelong friends. To all my teammates, coaches and staff, thank you all for pushing me, supporting me, and making me a better person/player every single day. A special thanks goes to my family. You have traveled all over the world and were in my corner every step of the way and I love you all. “This has been a special team to be a part of and I am beyond proud of what we have achieved both on and off the field. The memories I have made over the years will last me a lifetime. I know one chapter is ending, but I am so excited to continue to see the growth of this team going forward and what more they can accomplish.” Who will start at goalkeeper for the USWNT after Alyssa Naeher retires? The Sporting News looks over the top candidates to replace Naeher in goal for the foreseeable future. Casey Murphy At 28, Casey Murphy has been the backup to Alyssa Naeher for quite some time now. During Vlatko Andonovski's tenure, the former USWNT head coach made a point to give Murphy time on the pitch, noting publicly on numerous occasions how important it was for Murphy to get time in the national team system should she need to be called upon in a competitive environment. Yet of her 20 international caps dating back to late 2021, Murphy has only been deployed in six competitive matches, and none at either a World Cup or Olympic games. She saw the field in the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship for three games and has made three other SheBelieves Cup appearances. A two-time Big 10 Goalkeeper of the Year with Rutgers and a two-time NWSL Challenge Cup winner with the NC Courage, Murphy probably has the inside track to secure the long-term spot for herself. Yet due to her relative international experience and a few talented younger possibilities on the radar, it's by no means a sure thing that Hayes will hand Murphy the job. Not listed on the November roster for the European matches, the USWNT coaching staff could be thinking elsewhere. Phallon Tullis-Joyce 2024 has been a year of rising stock for 28-year-old Phallon Tullis-Joyce, who before now hadn't been on the USWNT radar. Then, two things happened to vault the former Miami Hurricane into contention for the long-term starting job with the national team. First, she moved to Manchester United in September of last year to back up Mary Earps. Then, the following summer, Earps departed for PSG. Now, Tullis-Joyce is the starter for a Women's Super League contender, which lands her squarely in Emma Hayes' sights. She's been fantastic in the job, conceding just three goals in her first eight games, and has earned her first international call-up for Naeher's European swansong in late November. She likely won't see the field with Naeher getting her final show, so can she impress enough in training to warrant future communications from Hayes? Mandy Haught The youngest of the likely options for the immediate future, Mandy Haught has risen meteorically like the aforementioned Tullis-Joyce. Winning ACC Goalkeeper of the Year twice at Virginia Tech wasn't enough to vault her into the senior national team conversation with more experienced options available, but winning the NWSL championship last year with NJ/NY Gotham FC seemed to raise enough eyebrows. After moving to the Utah Royals this season and logging a strong xG differential on an attack-deficient team, which earned her a nomination for NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year (quite the feat for a keeper on a non-playoff team), she has finally been brought into the fold. After being called up for the first time in October and getting her first start in a clean sheet performance against Argentina, she's again been included for Naeher's swansong in Europe. Jane Campbell A former four-year starter at a top collegiate program Stanford, Campbell was selected in 2017 by the Houston Dash and has been with the NWSL side ever since, winning the league's Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2023. She has been part of the senior national team picture since 2013 and won a bronze medal with the squad in 2020, but has only seen the field eight times, largely considered third-choice behind a mix of Alyssa Naeher, Ashlynn Harris, and Casey Murphy. With the Dash struggling to a last-place finish in the 2024 season, Campbell has fallen out of the picture, but could a seismic shift in the depth charge change things up? Other options If Emma Hayes is looking for a younger player to mold for a longer-term solution to bring consistency to a position that has long belonged to just a few legendary players, she could turn to some young NWSL stars or even to the collegiate ranks. Beyond Haught and Campbell, the NWSL is somewhat devoid of American standout goalkeepers (German star Ann-Katrin Berger and England-born Anna Moorhouse were two of the three 2024 Goalkeeper of the Year nominees alongside Haught). Aubrey Kingsbury is the most obvious candidate, coming up just a game short of the NWSL title this season, but the former Wake Forest star is now 33 and has been behind many of the aforementioned names on the depth chart for years now. Bella Bixby of the Portland Thorns is also 29 without a USWNT senior call-up in her career. Claudia Dickey , still just 24, was a standout at UNC and has been on the fringes of the national team conversation, but her Seattle Reign conceded the most goals in the league this season. At the collegiate ranks, Mia Justus of Texas is the cousin of former USMNT standout Tim Howard and won a national championship as a backup with Florida State before transferring. She's long been a U.S. youth international and was named to the Mac Hermann Award watch list alongside Emily Puricelli , who has much less recognition at the U.S. youth level but was exceptional for St. Louis this season, logging a .861 save percentage and conceding just 11 goals in 23 games this year, putting her in the conversation for best in the nation.

A 14-member, all-local cast performs the Manitoba première of Jordi Mand’s 2022 stage adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s autobiographical novel and its sequel , squashed together into a single volume chronicling the lives of four close-knit sisters during the time of the American Civil War. Set in Concord, Mass., with the action beginning Christmas Eve, the story follows plucky protagonist and aspiring 16-year-old writer, Josephine (Jo) March — a thinly disguised Alcott — who rails against repressive societal norms in which women were relegated to becoming solely wives and mothers, ignoring the whispers of their own creative, searching hearts. LEIF NORMAN PHOTO Bailey Chin and Matthew Fletcher It’s a potent theme that holds as true today as it did when the American writer first penned her tales in 1868-69, and one wants to really, really like this warm-hearted show. We follow the lives of its four lead characters, the March family’s “little women:” Jo, Beth, 15, Amy, 14, and Meg, 12, carefully tended to by their beloved mother, “Marmee,” as each discovers her unique path towards vaguely defined concepts of womanhood. However, here’s the rub: an engaging theatrical production requires an alchemic blend of effective, sensitive casting; imaginative stage direction; and a compelling script in which the whole becomes much greater than the sum of its parts. This ambitious production often felt as loose as unbaked plum pudding. Having said that, standout performances include Megan Fry in her RMTC debut, consistently lighting up the stage like a Christmas bauble as the art-loving Amy, blossoming before our eyes from a petulant, foot-stomping teen (who spitefully burns Jo’s hand-written novel) to a worldly artiste following her heart to Paris. Another is Julia Davis as the fragile Beth, who actually does play Chopin as well as Christmas carols on her piano (snippets from Schumann’s laced throughout sound designer Ashley Au’s classically-based score are a nice touch) before her heartbreaking death from scarlet fever in Act 2. Ava Darrach-Gagnon likewise traverses an emotional arc as the sensible, upwardly mobile Meg, who ultimately discovers happiness as a wife and mother after marrying tutor Mr. John Brooke (Simon Miron). Ironically, the weakest link is Bailey Chin, given the unenviable task of balancing Jo’s rebellious streak with a softer, more human side in which we feel for her character — the holy grail of stagecraft. The latter quality is best represented through a series of interwoven monologues in which she shares her ambitions and aspirations, as well as her own war against suffocating, misogynistic attitudes of the late 19th century. Despite her gung-ho conviction, however, Chin’s portrayal feels uncomfortably one-dimensional throughout, and even cardboard-like at times, with physical mannerisms more at home in 2024 than the 1860s. Her rapid-fire barking out of lines, surely intended to be spirited, does not allow greater emotional depth to fully register and settle. More responsive counterpoint, pregnant pauses and, by extension, greater dramatic tension, would have made this a more compelling and relatable performance. Several of the narrative’s “big moments” are simply glossed over, including the death of sweet Beth and the stumbling marriage proposal from Laurie (Matthew Fletcher), as the entire cast whips through the highly episodic show with scarcely a moment to breathe. Effective stage direction would have helped mitigate this, with Katie German — who appeared as an actor on this same stage in , and — marking her RMTC directorial debut. LEIF NORMAN PHOTO From left: Bailey Chin, Ava Darrach-Gagnon, Julia Davis and Megan Fry perform as the March sisters in RMTC’s production of Little Women. Even some of the play’s earlier scenes, in which the sisters create mini-plays, egged on by Jo, don’t ring true and lack joy. They feel more about getting lines out than creating a sense of playful spontaneity. Amid all this bah humbug, bravo to veteran Winnipeg actor Jan Skene for her pitch-perfect, long-suffering matriarch “Marmee,” who contains her own simmering rage at the world’s injustices, as well as the charismatic Rodrigo Beilfuss (doubling as a bandaged Pastor March returning home from army service) for crafting Jo’s intellectual equal, the stereotype-free Professor Friedrich Bhaer who woos — and wins — her heart. Fletcher’s feckless Laurie (a.k.a. “Teddy”) is wholly believable, while the riveting Tracey Nepinak nearly steals the show every time she appears as crusty Aunt March, single-handedly creating a world of subtext along with her pet parakeet. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. This production boasts strong visual appeal, including sumptuous period frocks and suits denoting class structures designed by costumer Joseph Abetria, with malleable set pieces by Jawon Kang morphing into multiple locales. Hugh Conacher’s spot-on lighting includes nifty gobo effects, with ballroom choreography created by Rachael McLaren. One final note: this is a long show, clocking in at a full 170 minutes (including intermission); it becomes exhausting by the end. As the latest addition in an ever-evolving series of stage and screen adaptations of Alcott’s classic — Greta Gerwig’s 2019 film taking viewers on the most adventurous ride — Mand’s copiously detailed play, premièred by the Stratford Festival in June 2022, often loses sight of the forest for the trees, crying out for further whittling while also strangely omitting some of the novel’s most iconic, beloved lines. Jo, who makes good on her promise to “do something extraordinary with my life,” achieving her dream of becoming a professional writer by the play’s end, would surely agree. holly.harris@shaw.ca ● John Hirsch Mainstage, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre ● To Dec. 14 ★★★1⁄2 out of five Advertisement AdvertisementSustainable Marine Fuel Confidence Index 2024 – the results are inAs Sudan continues its journey towards democratic governance and reconciliation, the question of Omar al-Bashir's legacy looms large, serving as a reminder of the challenges and complexities inherent in the country's political transition. The political face of India has undergone great changes with the leadership of those who have guided this nation to its present stature. Among them, a giant of a man recently passed away, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, at the age of 92. His demise has affected many politicians and citizens alike. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi put this grief into words in a poignant post on X, where he described Singh as “a mentor and guide.” Table of Contents A Leader of Integrity Manmohan Singh and his role in Indian economy A Complex Legacy A Leader of Integrity In his tribute, Gandhi said Singh had distinguished qualities, with his leadership marked by wisdom and integrity. “He led India with a profound sense of humility and a thorough understanding of economics,” Gandhi recalled, pointing to the significance of Singh in the life of the nation. “I have lost a mentor. Millions will remember him with pride,” he declared, his words striking the hearts of many who felt that Singh had served the country for decades. Similarly, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul’s sister, praised Singh for the deep respect he commanded in the political arena. She said that he was a man of utmost honesty and that he stood tall in adversity, which reflected his character. This feeling of praise was expressed on social media platforms by people who were celebrating Singh’s legacy. Manmohan Singh and his role in Indian economy From humble beginnings, Dr. Manmohan Singh rose to become a towering figure in Indian politics and economy. His role as Union Finance Minister during the 1991 economic crisis made him a reluctant yet powerful architect of India’s economic reforms. Singh’s guidance ushered India into the world of global markets, completely changing the country’s economic scenario. He carried this transformation further when he entered the position of Prime Minister as the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance won the elections of 2004—a career landmark for him. He relentlessly worked on bringing the Indian economy up, and he worked on upgrading millions of people. One of the first to pay tributes was Prime Minister Narendra Modi , who described Singh as “one of India’s most distinguished leaders.” Modi highlighted Singh’s background from humble beginnings to being a respected economist. He acknowledged that Singh had an immense impact on economic policies during his tenure in different official capacities, which forms a testament to his legacy in India’s development. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also condoled, saying Singh had been a very valuable contribution to the country and a very strong Finance Minister. These tributes speak to the broad appeal and respect that transcended party lines. A Complex Legacy Dr. Singh’s journey was not without challenges. Though he was admired for his integrity, his government was substantially criticized for allegations of corruption and inaction. But 2G spectrum and the Commonwealth Games scams marred the latter half of the tenure of his government; hence, some people regarded him as the “Accidental Prime Minister.” For his part, Singh claimed to believe that history was going to treat him differently, a feeling that defines the complexity of his times. Manmohan Singh’s life and accomplishments only reflect the gigantic figure of Indian politics that he formed. His commitment to reforming India’s economy as well as his dedication to the betterment of public welfare leaves an indelible mark on the country. That is evident by the spate of sorrow and homage paid after he breathed his last. True, it is but another way to say that the legend has come to pass away; yet its legacy will shape and form many more in the future.
