The second time I saw Antonblast I thought it was Pizza Tower . And the third time I saw Antonblast I thought it was Pizza Tower , too. I have now played Antonblast and can confirm that while it shares similar Wario Land vibes and ‘90s DNA with last year’s crowd-pleasing, lightning-quick 2D platformer , Antonblast is definitely its own thing. It’s more challenging, even faster, and shares some familiar tropes from the slippy-slidy obstacle course racing of Crash Bandicoot , including stampeding through boxes, hitting a cache of explosives, and dying. The idea is to breeze through levels as quickly as possible, smashing through all kinds of colorful junk littering each stage, and survive the gauntlet of hazards and boss fights placed in your path. It’s loud, chunky, and occasionally gives me a headache with all of the screenshake. It’s also a firehose of satisfying arcade action and chaotic animations. Back in 2015, I had worked my way pretty far into The Witcher 3 , only to find that I was capital-L Lost. I didn’t know what was going on. Barely understood the universe, and that’s to say nothing of my sloppy knowledge of the mechanics. So I restarted the game from the beginning with the intention of going through it nice and slow and, look at that, it became one of my favorite games of the 2010s. Now, on the cusp of 2025, I find myself in a similar situation with GOTY-nominated RPG Metaphor: ReFantazio . Whether it was my diving in while in a, um...high state of mind or simply that the game is so heavy—a little too heavy, in my opinion—on the fantasy political lore, I’m a bit too lost at this point to grasp what’s going on. But I do know that this game has had me intrigued since I decided to temporarily shelve it in favor of Forbidden West and I knew I was going to have to revisit it. So my goal for this weekend is to get a fresh start! I’m really excited to start unpacking Metaphor’s themes of, well, metaphors. I’m particularly intrigued by how the game plays with the ways fiction serves as important inspiration, offering a way to envision a better world. And I’m a sucker for anything with turn-based combat. This weekend, I’m gonna try to fight my inclination to avoid the game and instead play the Not- Overwatch until I pass out. I have to travel next week for the holidays, so getting started on something really involved right now wouldn’t be the best play. And so, another weekend in which I’m planning to play more Fortnite is upon us. I’m starting to worry that people reading these every week might assume it’s the only game I play. It’s not! At this point in my life, though, I have to admit that Epic’s free-to-play battle royale is one of my most played games, likely beating out Skyrim, Half-Life 2, and even Halo . The number of hours I’ve put into Fortnite is probably starting to get close to surpassing the time I’ve spent with GTA Online . Scary to think about. Anyway, every few months Fortnite gets some new mode or event and I spend a few bucks to buy a skin or whatever and have a ton of fun playing it with my wife. Yeah, I know gamers playing the same four games and nothing else are slowly eroding the industry and destroying everything, but it’s not my fault that no other game lets me kill Goku while dressed as Spider-Man with Grogu on my back. More recently, in September, a Chinese research institute and several other companies were sanctioned on similar grounds. Following the announcement of these sanctions, US government spokesperson Matthew Miller warned that the US would not hesitate to sanction even its allies over disagreements concerning security concerns. However, one cannot help but question why this security concern is not applied universally to other nations with similar profiles. The US deputy national security adviser, speaking at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace forum, claimed that Pakistan has developed sophisticated missile technology capable of enabling larger rocket motors, potentially extending the range of its missiles beyond South Asia – even reaching the US. To any unbiased observer, this concern might seem paranoid unless it were applied consistently and based on principles that hold all nations accountable without exceptions. Pakistan has repeatedly conveyed its nuclear intentions to the US, citing its serious security concerns vis-a-vis a larger adversary in the subcontinental conflict equation. This adversary is heavily armed with nuclear weapons and remains fixated on dismembering Pakistan further, as it did in 1971. The US strategy of recruiting India as a regional gendarme to counterbalance China may backfire when push comes to shove. India has mastered the art of playing both sides, skillfully leveraging global powers' fears to extract concessions for itself. It projects itself as a regional bulwark against Chinese expansion while simultaneously engaging in strategic relationships with both China and Russia – two of the primary adversaries of the US. India has long been indulged in nuclear and missile development domains. In 2008, it received a waiver from the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) restrictions, effectively exempting it from rules that apply to nuclear export controls for countries outside the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). This is particularly galling to morality-conscious members of the global community, given that the NSG itself was created in response to India’s 1974 nuclear test, ironically named ‘Smiling Buddha’. An even greater deviation from the rules-based order occurred in 2016, when India was granted membership in the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), despite its history of lax nuclear export controls. India continues to avoid adopting comprehensive International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards for its nuclear facilities and remains evasive on nuclear liability laws. It has repeatedly failed to control the illegal smuggling of fissile materials. As recently as August 2024, a gang was caught in illegal possession of highly radioactive material – californium – worth $100 million, echoing three similar incidents in 2021. The recurrent imposition of sanctions on Pakistan appears to stem from a misplaced ‘range phobia’ in the US. Rooted in the paranoia of its Indian and other allies, this policy unfairly targets Pakistan. Meanwhile, India’s development of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), such as the Agni V with a range exceeding 5,000 kilometres, raises no alarms among the so-called international security community. In contrast, Pakistan’s longest-range ballistic missile, the Shaheen III, has a range of 2,750 kilometres, explicitly designed as a deterrent against specific threats. It poses no danger to any other country, including US allies. The US must understand that its allies might be misleading it into adopting a coercive policy that risks alienating an erstwhile partner. Despite its disappointments, Pakistan has consistently expressed a desire to maintain a mutually beneficial relationship with the US. The international community must also recognise that unchecked nuclear, ballistic missile defence (BMD), and missile technology support for India, coupled with unjust sanctions against Pakistan, undermine the stability of nuclear deterrence in South Asia. This imbalance threatens to ignite a renewed arms race and increases the risk of conflicts escalating uncontrollably. Granting nuclear exceptionalism to one party in the deterrence equation poses significant risks to regional and global stability. This lesson must be internalised by global powers. History has shown that the unfair application of sanctions regimes rarely achieves their intended outcomes. Instead, such measures often strengthen the resolve of the sanctioned nations to circumvent these inequitable restrictions. Domestically, it is crucial for Pakistan’s detractors and uninformed segments of society to grasp the importance of social cohesion and national resolve. A coordinated barrage of negative propaganda targeting the country’s strategic deterrence capabilities – and the associated costs – must be met with clarity and unity. Social media platforms, in particular, have become fertile ground for such campaigns. However, the lessons from countries like Libya, Iraq, and Syria serve as stark reminders of the consequences of abandoning a robust defence posture. These nations, despite their material and human wealth, now lie in ruins. The cost of liberty and sovereignty far outweighs the price of maintaining a credible strategic deterrent. Pakistan’s nuclear and missile programmes are not driven by aggression but by the fundamental need to secure its sovereignty against existential threats. Any coercive policies aimed at undermining this capability will not only fail but may also exacerbate regional instability. For the sake of global peace, it is imperative that international policies be guided by fairness, consistency, and a genuine commitment to equitable treatment for all nations. New York Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said Aaron Rodgers “absolutely” will remain the team's starting quarterback and start Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. Rodgers, who turns 41 next Monday, has been hampered at times during the Jets' 3-8 start by various injuries to his left leg, including a sore knee, sprained ankle and balky hamstring. Ulbrich said Monday the quarterback came back from the team's bye-week break ready to go. “All I can say, and you'd have to ask Aaron if he's fully healthy, but he's better off today than he's been as of late,” Ulbrich said. "So he's definitely feeling healthier than he has probably for the past month. A healthy Aaron Rodgers is the Aaron Rodgers we all love. “So, I'm excited about what that looks like.” NFL Network reported on Sunday that Rodgers, who missed all but four snaps last season with a torn left Achilles tendon , has declined having medical scans on his injured leg so he can continue to play. “I have not been informed of that, either way,” Ulbrich said. Rodgers suffered what NFL Network reported was a “significant” hamstring injury against Denver in Week 4. He then sprained his left ankle against Minnesota in London a week later. The four-time MVP has not been able to consistently move around during games as he has in the past, when extending plays and making things happen on the run became such a big part of his game. Rodgers said leading into New York's 28-27 loss to Indianapolis last Sunday that it was the healthiest he felt in a while. But he struggled against the Colts, finishing 22 of 29 for 184 yards after a brutally slow start during which he went 9 of 13 for just 76 yards. The Athletic reported last week that owner Woody Johnson broached the idea during a meeting with the coaching staff of having the banged-up Rodgers sit after the Jets' loss to Denver in Week 4. With Rodgers' struggles and perhaps compromised health the past few games, a hot debate on social media and sports talk shows during the past week has been whether the quarterback should take a seat in favor of Tyrod Taylor. But when asked if there has been any talk of shutting down Rodgers, Ulbrich replied flatly: “There has not.” In a follow-up question, the interim coach was asked if Rodgers will, in fact, be the Jets' starting quarterback at home Sunday against the Seahawks. “Absolutely,” Ulbrich said.
